Islanders’ scoring comes fast as lightning in 3-1 victory

It took the Islanders a while to break through on Saturday night, but once they did, they were well on their way to a fourth straight win, beating the Lightning, 3-1, at Nassau Coliseum.

The Islanders peppered rookie goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy throughout the game, but still trailed 1-0 until John Tavares tied the game at one.

Anders Lee then gave the Isles their first lead of the night and Nikolay Kulemin finished the scoring.

For nearly 50 minutes, the Islanders controlled play and had more than twice as many shots as the Lightning, but trailed when Ryan Strome's shot glanced off the post and mere seconds later, Brett Connolly gave the Lightning the lead.

It was Connolly's redirection of a pass by Tyler Johnson that beat Jaroslav Halak at 9:16 of the third period and helped end the Isles' three-game winning streak.

The Islanders had plenty of chances to score first.

After two periods, the Isles outshot Tampa Bay 29-9, but fill-in Vasilevskiy was up to the task.
In the first, Frans Nielsen was stopped on a short-handed breakaway and then Tavares was stuffed at close range later in the period.

The threats continued in the second in front of another large, loud home crowd.

First, Josh Bailey fed Kyle Okposo for what looked like another golden opportunity, but Okposo was unable to get a handle on the puck. Both Nielsen and Okposo tested Vasilevskiy later in the period, but were unable to score.

Another power play was squandered in the second following Cedric Paquette's boarding of Johnny Boychuk. This time, however, the Isles generated almost no offense with the extra man as the game remained scoreless.

Halak, starting back-to-back nights for the first time this season, wasn't tested much until the third.
Tampa Bay briefly appeared to take an early lead after a scrum in front of Halak, but a review showed Brian Boyle kicked the puck in and the goal was overturned 4:20 into the first.

The Islanders found themselves shorthanded when Casey Cizikas was called for interference at 15:54, but the Isles quickly wound up with their best scoring chance of the period, the Nielsen breakaway.

It was the Isles' fourth four-game winning streak of the season.

The Lightning were coming off a shootout loss to the Devils in Newark on Friday and closed a five game, eight-day road trip on Saturday.
