While Kate took over the city early this week, Princess Diana set the bar high for her future daughter-in-law with her own fashionable visits to NYC.

Modal Trigger

On her first official visit to New York in February 1989, Diana dressed like a fairy-tale princess in a beaded and embroidered ivory duchesse satin gown and bolero by English designer Victor Edelstein for a Brooklyn Academy of Music gala. During the three-day trip, her first overseas without her husband, the princess promoted social causes and British products by visiting places like Harlem Hospital's pediatric AIDS unit and FAO Schwarz.

The princess made a 24-hour trip to New York in January 1995 to present her friend, Harper's Bazaar editor Liz Tilberis, with a CFDA award at the Lincoln Center ceremony. While Diana's sleek, midnight blue Catherine Walker column and seven strand pearl-and sapphire choker were much admired, her slicked back duckbill 'do was the talk of the town.

Lucky Henry Kissinger greeted a glowing Princess of Wales with two smooches and presented her with the Humanitarian of the Year Award at the United Cerebral Palsy gala in December 1995. The then-34 year-old princess dazzled in a low-cut sequined black gown by the Moroccan born, London-based Jacques Azagury. The next day, the papers dubbed the diplomat and political scientist, "Henry Kissing-her."

British designer John Galliano was appointed Christian Dior's creative director in October 1996, and two months later Princess Diana modeled his first dress for the French fashion house at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Ball. The lingerie inspired sapphire blue slip dress edged in black lace was a daring choice for the newly divorced Diana.

Two of the most famous women in the world walked hand in-hand in The Bronx in June 1997 and died six days apart less than three months later. Princess Diana — in the US on a Red Cross fund-raising mission for land mine victims — spent a few days in Washington, DC, then flew to New York to see Mother Teresa, who was ailing and living at a convent in the South Bronx. The People's Princess wore an immaculate cream suit and captoe pumps that matched Mother Teresa's simple white sari.

Diana jetted back to New York for the Christie's auction of 79 of her gowns on June 25, 1997. She chose a Catherine Walker glass-beaded floral dress that showed off her fabulous legs for the June 23 preview. Two days later, the auction raised $3.25 million for Diana's favorite cancer and AIDS charities; it was one of her last public appearances before her death on Aug. 31, 1997.
