Forgetful Geno Smith happy with the way he played

Jets quarterback Geno Smith did not have many issues with how he played in the 17-16 loss to the Patriots on Sunday.

"After watching it on tape, I think played good," Smith said on a conference call. "I made some good throws, made some good reads. Once again, I think we should have fared better in the red zone. I thought we did take some shots in the end zone when we got down there. I think we did a good job overall. Protection was great. The run game was great. Aside from one or two plays here and there, I think as an offense we did a pretty good job against a really good defense."

There is no question Smith had periods of decent play and he did make some nice throws, but he wiped most of that away with an interception in the third quarter and by taking a sack in the fourth quarter on third down that pushed the Jets to the edge of field-goal range. Nick Folk ended up missing a 52-yarder that was tipped by Patriots tackle Vince Wilfork.

"I know you're supposed to get the ball away in that situation," Smith said. "Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to and I wasn't able to."

Dont'a Hightower beat tackle Breno Giacomini and running back Bilal Powell, who were indecisive on who was supposed to block the blitzing linebacker, to get to Smith.

"Pretty much you know that in that situation it's pretty much a got-to-have-it situation," Smith said. "You go over it and with the team in that spot, they're going to blitz. They had it mugged up, but we had guys to protect it. Unfortunately, like I said, I just got immediate pressure and didn't want to run backwards or try to scramble out to the right or to the left and take a bigger sack, so I tried to pretty much eat it right there and take as minimal a loss as I could."

Smith finished 17-of-27 for 210 yards with one touchdown and the interception.

On the field-goal attempt, Ryan admitted initially he called for a pooch punt. The Jets called timeout as the ball was snapped to Folk, who ended up punting it after the whistle blew. Ryan then asked Folk if he thought he could make the field goal. Folk said yes, so Ryan decided to try it.

"I knew it was going to be a stretch," Ryan said. "I said, you know what, we can win this game here and I have great faith in Nick Folk."

Ryan said C Nick Mangold has a "bad sprain" of his left ankle. He said WR Percy Harvin is "extremely sore" with a ribs injury.

"One thing I know about both those players, if they can play, they're going to play," Ryan said.
