The founder of Chobani Greek yogurt paints his ex-wife as a shakedown artist in an attempt to quash a lawsuit she filed for a cut of his billion-dollar business.
Dr. Ayse Giray claims she gave her former spouse, Hamdi Ulukaya, $198,000 between 1997 and 1999 to start a cheese company.
But Ulukaya, who didn't develop the yogurt wing of his business until 2004, says his ex hasn't provided any evidence for the investment, like a bank statement, and wasn't issued any shares in his corporation.
"This case is an opportunistic effort to extract a piece of a lucrative business she had no part in building or, put more simply, a shakedown," Ulukaya says in the Manhattan Supreme Court suit.
Giray "played no operational role in the creation, growth, or success of Chobani," he adds.
But Giray's attorney, Richard Feldman, says they have hard-copy proof that his client owns at least half of the yogurt empire.
