After the Penguins' young forward visited a hospital days before being confirmed to have mumps, the Islanders postponed their annual holiday hospital visits which were supposed to take place Wednesday.
"We're extremely disappointed that the event has been postponed," forward Kyle Okposo said in a release, "but [we] understand the circumstances."
The NHL has had over a dozen confirmed cases of mumps, including Derick Brassard and Tanner Glass of the Rangers. The most high-profile case is another Penguin, Sidney Crosby, who inexplicably met with the media last week while his face was clearly showing symptoms and his blood tests were waiting to be returned.
No one on the Islanders has shown any symptoms of mumps, and according to the release, "as of [Tuesday] no player or staff member has shown any signs or symptoms of infection."

"Nonetheless," the release continued, "to assure the health and wellness of hospitalized children, the organization has decided to be extremely cautious and postpone this important event. The toys that were purchased through donations from Package All Corp. and the New York Islanders Children's Foundation have already been given to the hospitals to distribute to the children."
The Islanders have made this one of their signature charity events every year, and were planning to have 24 players visit six different hospitals on Long Island, delivering gifts and spending time with sick children.
Okposo was supposed to join John Tavares and others at Steven and Alexandra Cohen's Children's Medical Center, in New Hyde Park.
The team is currently working to reschedule the visits.
"This has always been one of our favorite events to take part in because seeing a child smile when we give them a gift or take a picture with them, is what the holiday season is all about," said Okposo, who has a daughter almost 1 year old. "We're happy the children will still receive the gifts and look forward to visiting the local hospitals soon."
