Apple blasts BBC’s labor ‘exposé’

Apple executives lashed out at the BBC on Friday, saying they were "deeply offended" the UK broadcaster aired a documentary accusing the tech titan of backsliding on promises to improve working conditions throughout its Asian supply chain.

"We know of no other company doing as much as Apple does to ensure fair and safe working conditions," Jeff Williams, Apple's senior VP of operations, wrote in an e-mail to his UK team.

The BBC documentary, "Apple's Broken Promises," which aired Thursday on the news program "Panorama," focused on the extraction of tin from mines in Indonesia and on assembly operations in China. Appalling working conditions were filmed in both locations.

In one scene, a 12-year-old boy, digging tin from a ditch in Bangka, admitted to worrying about mudslides from the 70-foot cliffs above him.

Undercover reporters dispatched to work in a Shanghai plant become so exhausted from their 12-hour shifts they were seen constantly falling asleep at their workplace.

The documentary said it found one factory mandating overtime work and another requiring 18 straight days of work — both violations of Apple's guidelines.

Apple executives said they were making progress on overall work conditions.

Ninety-three percent of Apple suppliers are now in compliance with 60-hour workweek limits, Williams said in his e-mail. Roughly $20 million in fraudulent fees have been returned to workers and more than 750,000 workers have benefitted from Apple-created educational programs, he said. Still, Williams promised that Apple "will not rest until every person in our supply chain is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve."

Apple shares closed down 0.8 percent on Friday, to $111.78.
