Knicks’ Calderon in limbo for final tune-up

Jose Calderon feels better. But he won't know until Friday if he's completely better.

Calderon continued nursing a right calf strain Thursday and the Knicks point guard said he would not know until the morning if he would play in the final preseason game, Friday night in Montreal against the Raptors.

"Don't know yet. It's day-to-day," Calderon said about facing the Raptors. "It's better…We'll see tomorrow we're getting more treatment. It's nothing to worry about…It's better every day and like I said tomorrow we'll make a decision when I wake up."

Calderon expects to be ready for the season opener Wednesday against Chicago.

Calderon wasn't the only player to miss practice. Andrea Bargnani (hamstring), Amar'e Stoudemire (recovery day) and Pablo Prigioni (personal reasons) also did not practice. Bargnani underwent an ultrasound exam which confirmed his hamstring strain.

Coach Derek Fisher, a longtime teammate of Kobe Bryant, was asked about having a balance with a dominant scorer to keep other players happy.

This was in reference to the recent story that claimed players want to avoid playing alongside the Lakers star. And he was asked if juggling was needed with Carmelo Anthony.

"I don't know if it is a tough balance per se. It's consistent with what team work is about though," Fisher said. "The superstar guys have different personalities and egos, those are more so the things that you are balancing. When it comes to basketball, then it shouldn't be that difficult if guys are committed to the team, to balance that out. Having played with several guys that would be considered superstars, it is not that hard to do when everybody has a common purpose."

"As a coach, that is my job, to help everybody realize, that we have to figure out a way to blend this together that doesn't put Carmelo on an island and put the rest of the guys on another island. We have to really be on the same page."

Rookie Cleanthony Early admitted there was a lot to learn in his first preseason.

"The speed of the game, the offense, defensive positions, closing out, boxing out, the physicality of the game," Early said. "Pretty much a little bit of everything."

Fisher, while addressing the versatility of his front line, said Early "was really solid for us" Wednesday against Washington. Early said he is just trying to fit in and learn.

"Just to be effective and efficient on both sides of the court. That's what they tell me what they've been telling me since Day 1 and that's what I've got to go out and do," said Early, the Wichita State forward grabbed in the second round of the draft.

Amar'e Stoudemire said playing is the thing. Doesn't matter if it comes at the four or the five spot.

"I've played alongside Shaq [O'Neal] one year and the next year I played center. It doesn't quite matter. Whatever is best for us. Whatever it takes to win. Then so be it," Stoudemire said.

The Knicks signed 7-foot-1 Australian center Jordan Vandenberg who played for their summer league team after a collegiate career at North Carolina State. Vandenburg is expected to play for the Knicks' Westchester D-League affiliate.
