Giants ready for game which could define their season

Going into Sunday's must-have NFC East showdown in Dallas — in which a loss could end the Giants' division titles hopes — Big Blue admit they got punched hard last weekend against Philadelphia, and never got back up. But they insist they'll be ready to take the fight to the first-place Cowboys.

"[Philadelphia] hit us in the mouth, and we weren't prepared for it. But we're well-prepared this weekend,'' said defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who vowed the Giants are ready to not only get off the deck but to hit back. "Coming off a loss like that, it puts you down. But you've got to get over it.''

Walk around the Giants locker room and ask players about that loss — a 27-0 beating that was more of an emasculation than a contest — and they quickly change the subject. They will claim they have put it behind them, but the truth is the loss hurt because they let themselves get pushed around, a mistake they plan to avoid in Dallas.

"It's going to be a fight," Pierre-Paul said. "The loss we had was terrible. I'm pretty sure everyone felt it. But it's a different atmosphere.

"We know what we need to do to win: Play physical. We didn't play physical last time. We gave up 27 points. That's not like us. Whatever we had to do to make things right, we did this week. It's going to be a fight, a fourth-quarter game.''

The Giants talked all sorts of trash during the week leading to last Sunday's game, then went out quietly during the loss that was over well before the fourth quarter.

Coach Tom Coughlin had told the team's website they played "un-Giant-like,'' but did say they practiced well Thursday and Friday, and appeared focused.

"Like I said, [Thursday] was a good day, a good hard practice, today was a continuation of that. We're working at it,'' Coughlin said.

He didn't directly address the topic of trash-talk with the media on Friday, but admitted the things that weren't lending themselves toward a focused group last week have since been eradicated. "I think, yeah, those things were,'' he said.

Asked if his Giants appeared distracted headed to Dallas, Coughlin curtly replied, "No.''
They can ill afford to be. At 3-3 with a loss to NFC East-leading Philadelphia, the Giants are already two games behind the Eagles and the co-division-leading Cowboys. A loss in Dallas would drop them three games behind — and the head-to-head tiebreaker — just before the halfway mark of the season.

To upset the Cowboys, the Giants will need to improve in almost every aspect of the game, including their physicality.

"[We needed to fix] obviously our level of intensity, our technique, just our overall level of play," safety Antrel Rolle said. "Nothing we did last week obviously was good enough. We came here to correct everything this week."

"We need to be more physical no matter what team we play, based off last week's performance. We need to be physical each and every time we take the field.''

They often have been more physical than Dallas, but the Cowboys have a newfound physicality on both sides of the ball, pounding NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray behind a great young offensive line and surpassing all reasonable expectations on defense.

"We need to fight for four quarters,'' wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said. "[The key is] us being physical, coming out and being the physical team off the jump, from the get-go. That's what we didn't do last time,'' said Pierre-Paul, who will match up with Dallas Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith. "Make sure you win the ones that count. This is a division game. We're going to go out there and do our jobs.''
