DeMarco Murray casually runs into history in win over Giants

ARLINGTON, Texas — DeMarco Murray's legs did a lot of damage Sunday.

Not only did the Cowboys' gifted back run the Giants into the ground and Dallas to its sixth consecutive victory, but Murray also ran himself into the NFL record books during a 31-21 triumph at AT&T Stadium.

Murray became the first player in league history to start a season with seven consecutive 100-yard rushing performances (breaking Jim Brown's record in the process) after romping through and around the Giants for 128 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries.

Murray was low-key about his big day, but it practically caused Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo — who had quite the afternoon himself with three TD passes — to choke up afterward.

"It's just special to be part of this," Romo said. "It's something you don't always get to do. It really could not happen to a better guy. I love that kid, and he'll always be a brother to me, even when we're done [playing]."

With arguably the NFL's best offensive line leading the way, Murray remained the biggest reason for the Cowboys' surprising 6-1 start after three consecutive 8-8 finishes by Dallas caused most observers to write them off in August.

Murray now has 913 yards on the ground this season, which is one more rushing yard than the entire backfield of the Raiders and Falcons have combined.

"I think we did it as a group," Murray said, crediting an offensive line stacked with high draft picks that is blowing open huge holes. "It's definitely hard for me to accept this individually, and I definitely wish those [blockers] were here."

Murray did most of his damage against the Giants in the first half, rushing 13 times for 73 yards. The big difference Sunday and all season, for that matter, was new Cowboys play-caller Scott Linehan sticking with the run in the second half.

Murray carried 15 more times after halftime, including seven times on a clock-draining, 10 play field goal drive that allowed the Cowboys to seal the deal after the Giants had pulled within 28-21 with 5:28 left.

"We pride ourselves in trying to finish the game and not putting our defense back out there," Murray said. "It was nice to do that again today."

It remains to be seen, though, how much longer the oft-injured Murray can sustain his torrid success.

The former Oklahoma star has never been able to play an entire NFL season, and the injury concerns reared their head again Sunday when he tweaked his ankle and left the game for a brief spell.

Murray is on pace to carry 427 times this season, which would smash the all-time record of 416 rushing attempts by the Chiefs' Larry Johnson in 2006.

Murray seemed to take his fragile history into account Sunday, when he cautioned that "it's a long season." The Cowboys, though, are certainly enjoying the ride for as long as it lasts.

"He's talented, he's explosive and he's physical," Romo said of Murray. "Then he goes out there and does it every single day. It's a great thing to see."
