Bullying and harassment end high school’s football season

One New Jersey high school is taking a stand against bullying and its powerhouse football team's season is over as a result.

New Jersey's Sayreville War Memorial high school's season is over after evidence emerged of incidents of harassment, intimidation and hazing, NJ.com reported. Superintendent Rich Labbe announced Monday night during a meeting with parents.

"There was enough evidence to substantiate there were incidents of harassment, intimidation and bullying that took place on a pervasive level, on a wide-scale level and at a level in which the players knew, tolerated and in general accepted," Labbe, who also said the junior varsity and freshman seasons are over as well, told NJ.com.

Labbe announced Friday the Middlesex Country Prosecutor's Office and borough people were investigating allegations of a "significant and serious nature" within the football program. There is an ongoing criminal investigation, according to the report, and Labbe declined to discuss the future of the coaching staff.

NJ.com reported freshman players would "stampede" to the locker room after practices to get dressed before senior players would push them around. It was also reported Charles Garcia, an assistant coach on the varsity team, was arrested Sept. 26 and charged with steroids possession and a disorderly persons offense following a traffic stop in Somerset County.

Garcia's attorney told the website the coach had resigned his position, while saying the arrest was not related to supplying steroids to the football program.

Labbe postponed Sayreville's game against South Brunswick last Thursday based on information obtained from local law enforcement indicating they were "not random" criminal acts "generally known by the players." It was later ruled a forfeit, along with the team's previous four games.

One of the state's top public school football programs, Sayreville has won three NJSIAA sectional titles over the last four years, and had reached the playoffs the last 20 years — until now.
