202 killed in crashes on city streets this year: NYPD study

"Vision Zero" is not quite there.

Mayor de Blasio's plan to end all traffic deaths is facing a harsh reality — 202 people have died in crashes on city streets this year, according to data through Friday.

Of those, 101 were pedestrians and 60 were drivers, according to data compiled by the NYPD and WNYC radio.

Cyclist deaths have surged this year, with at least 17 bike riders dying in crashes, compared to nine in the same 10-month period last year. The death toll is already higher than the year-end total of 12 cyclist fatalities in 2013.

Overall, traffic deaths are down about 10 percent from last year — with 226 fatalities in 2013 from January through the end of October, compared with 202 deaths this year from January through Oct. 17.

The city finished the year in 2013 with 286 people dying in traffic accidents.

Caroline Samponaro, a director with Transportation Alternatives, said the increase in fatal bicycle accidents shows the city needs more dedicated bike lanes.

"In order for [Vision Zero] to become a reality by 2024, a lot more needs to be done," Samponaro said.

As part of the mayor's plan, the city will drop the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph starting next month.

Transportation Alternatives is rallying for an overhaul of major thoroughfares like Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue and Queens Boulevard to make them safer. Such arterial streets — multi-lane roads designed to move high-volume traffic — make up only 15 percent of the city's roads but are where more than half of fatal pedestrian and bike accidents happen, Samponaro said.

This year's data show that Brooklyn and Queens have the most fatal accidents.

Queens had 72 deaths, or 36 percent of traffic fatalities citywide. Brooklyn saw 63 people killed, or 31 percent of crash deaths.

"If we're going to see a big change in these numbers by this time next year, we need a strict enforcement of the speed limit and redesign of arterial streets," Samponaro said.
