Victor Cruz thrilled to hurt his hips from salsa-ing

Those weren't boos you heard. Giants fans were screaming "Cruuuuuuz."

After spending the latter part of last Sunday afternoon in the MetLife Stadium doghouse, hearing it from the same fans who watched him go from the practice squad to the Pro Bowl, Victor Cruz returned to his familiar role of fan favorite.

Cruz caught five passes and turned them into 107 yards and he found the end zone after close to a year-long hiatus, performing like the playmaker the Giants desperately need.

"Any time you're making plays, it boosts your confidence no matter who you are," Cruz said after the Giants topped the Texans 30-17 at MetLife Stadium Sunday afternoon. "It's definitely something I'm going to build off individually and spread through my team."

It had been a rough start to the season for Cruz, a newly installed team captain being counted on to be the No. 1 receiver for the first time in his five-year career. After an ugly Week 1 loss in Detroit, he called for more passes to be thrown his way. Cruz didn't exactly back his big talk up, however, dropping two key throws in last Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, receiving rare boos.

"Being from here, I'm just excited to put on a show for them and get them excited," Cruz said when asked about the harsh reaction from the crowd last Sunday. "That will translate over to my teammates and my team and the entire offense. That's always the plan."

He turned a quick slant over the middle into a 61-yard gain, running past members of the Texans' secondary before being dragged down in the red zone. It was the kind of play many expected to see more from Cruz in the new West Coast offense installed by new coordinator Ben McAdoo, short completions followed by long gains.

"Absolutely. I think that's indicative of what this offense can do," Cruz said. "That's definitely what this offense can do, getting the ball to us. We're very athletic on the outside and all the receivers can make something happen with the football. It's just a matter of getting the ball in our hands and us doing what we can do with it."

The biggest play of the day for Cruz came with 3:21 left in the first half. He caught a short pass, made Texans cornerback Kareem Jackson miss, and darted to the left corner for a 26-yard touchdown.

"It's been a long time since I got in that end zone," he said, a smile splashed across his face. "It felt good to dance again, but my hips hurt from dancing."

Cruz had previously promised a new salsa dance, but he stuck with his old steps for this score.

"You have to wait on that, man," he said. "I have to give you the original for the first one and then when I get in there a couple more times, you might see something else."
