Terry Crews and game shows would seem to make strange bedfellows.

But, as he's quick to point out, the new host of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" is no stranger to the genre.

"My first job in entertainment was a game show called 'Battle Dome,' where they put me in a cage and had me fight three different contestants for prizes," says the ebullient Crews, a onetime NFL defensive end. "It was kind of like a cheap knockoff of 'American Gladiator,' but 'Millionaire' is much easier," he says. "There's no blood and we're not sending people to the hospital."

Crews, who will continue co-starring as Sgt. Terry Jeffords on Fox's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," begins his "Millionaire" run Monday (2 p.m./Ch. 7) as the show's third daytime host, following veteran Meredith Vieira and Cedric the Entertainer's one-season stint.

"My whole life is a shift and I'm used to doing things I've never done," says Crews, who's already taped 125 "Millionaire" shows (since July) in the show's Stamford, Ct. studio. "I've got my 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' schedule and five movies coming out but when I was presented with this opportunity I grabbed it.

"This was a job I was born to do," he says. "For one, I love people and love being around people … and all the live energy, with people in the studio audience cheering. But what really surprised me was how invested I get with every contestant. I had no clue how much I want them to win, and that really snuck up on me. When they don't win, I'm crushed. I told my wife [Rebecca], 'This is hard. I'm too invested.' I come home exhausted. My wife said, 'That's how you're supposed to feel.'

"If I could, I'd call it 'Who Wants to Be a Billionaire,' but they told me that I'm responsible for anything over a million [dollars]!"

Crews, 46, got his big TV break as Julius on UPN/CW's "Everybody Hates Chris," which was produced by Chris Rock and aired from 2006-2009. That led to roles on "The Newsroom," "Arrested Development," a popular Old Spice commercial and, on the-big screen, roles in "White Chicks" and "The Expendables."

Crews, who retired from the NFL in 1997, remembers watching the show's original prime-time incarnation with host Regis Philbin.

"I got a chance to talk to Regis and he told me, 'Terry, you're [the contestants'] connection. You sit with them and make them feel comfortable.' He's my guy," Crews says, mentioning the monochromatic suits Philbin popularized when he hosted "Millionaire."

"Every day you're going to see a fashion show from me," Crews says. "A friend of mine went to Paris and London and bought me suits and shoes. I want this to be a prime-time show in daytime. That's my thing and I'm invested in that. We're going Old Spice commercial meets 'The Expendables' meets a game show.

"That's my 'Millionaire.' "
