Obama sending 3,000 GIs to help Ebola-stricken areas

WASHINGTON — President Obama warned Tuesday the deadly Ebola epidemic is "spiraling out of control" in West Africa and called on the world to step up to contain the outbreak before hundreds of thousands are infected.

"Now, here's the hard truth: In West Africa, Ebola is now an epidemic of the likes that we have not seen before. It's spiraling out of control. It is getting worse," Obama said at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

The president is ordering the deployment of 3,000 US military personnel to help provide aid to stricken countries — more troops than he pledged last week to battle the Islamic State terrorists in Iraq.

Yet world health workers cautioned the US reaction has been slow and may not be nearly enough.

"The response to Ebola continues to fall dangerously behind," Dr. Joanne Liu, president of Doctors Without Borders, told a UN special briefing on Ebola in Geneva.

On Capitol Hill, senators compared the seriousness of the disease that has already infected 5,000 people to the threat of the murderous ISIS terrorists.

"We need to declare war on Ebola," Kansas GOP Sen. Jerry Moran said at an Ebola hearing in the Senate.

Dr. Kent Brantly, the US doctor who miraculously survived Ebola contracted in Africa, told Congress more capacity and staff are needed immediately to fight the disease that nearly killed him.

"We have to do it now," Brantly said. "This has been in the eye of government for months. We can't afford to wait months or even weeks to take action."

The cost of containing the deadly outbreak could reach nearly $1 billion, according to the World Health Organization.

"This health crisis we face is unparalleled in modern times," said Dr. Bruce Aylward, WHO's assistant director-general.

At least 2,400 deaths have been blamed on the outbreak, which has touched Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria and Senegal since it was first recognized in March.

Half of the nearly 5,000 cases occurred in the last three weeks, and officials said that it is not unthinkable that 20,000 could become infected before the outbreak is over.

The United States drew criticism last week when it promised to set up a 25-bed field hospital in Liberia to serve health care workers, both local and foreign, who become infected.
