Masahiro Tanaka nearly back, could get multiple starts

The Yankees are hoping Masahiro Tanaka's start Sunday against the Blue Jays is the first of two before the season ends.

"If everything goes well Sunday he will start again,'' manager Joe Girardi said before the Yankees' 5-3 victory over Toronto on Friday.

Tanaka's outing Sunday will be the $175 million investment's first big league action since July 8. The next day, it was announced Tanaka had a small tear in the UCL in his right elbow. Presented with the option of a rehab program or Tommy John surgery that takes 12 to 18 months of recovery time, the Yankees and Tanaka opted for the rehab.

Three simulated games, numerous bullpen sessions and countless games of catch later, Tanaka is ready to face big league hitters.
Girardi said the Yankees will wait to see how much rest Tanaka would have between Sunday's outing and a second start.

"Let's see where we are at and how he does on Sunday,'' Girardi said. "My initial inkling would be on his sixth day.''

That would be Saturday in Boston in the next-to-last game of the regular season and Girardi didn't sound as if the Yankees plan to create simulated games for him in Tampa.

"If he comes through those two fine I don't think there will be any more starts for him,'' said Girardi, who believes Tanaka will be good for 70 to 75 pitches Sunday.

When Tanaka went down with the injury there was a real chance not only this season would be finished, but at least half of next season — or possibly the entire year.

"Anytime someone talks about [the elbow], there is a high level of concern. There is always the fear that you are going to have surgery fairly quickly like [Ivan] Nova did,'' Girardi said. "But so far everything has been good in his rehab and we have been able to avoid [surgery]. We hope it continues and we are going to find out a lot more in the next eight days.''

When Tanaka was hurt, he was 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts and a legitimate contender for AL Cy Young and Rookie of the Year.

Tanaka's elbow has been a big topic of debate since he was diagnosed with the tear. Some wondered why the Yankees didn't sent Tanaka to have the surgery in July to get ahead of the recovery process.

"We feel that if his arm is going to be okay it's going to be okay and if it's not we want to have (surgery) done where he doesn't miss parts of three seasons,'' Girardi said. "It' a risk we are taking.''

Carlos Beltran was back in the lineup Friday night for the first time since Monday against the Rays. Beltran missed games Tuesday and Wednesday to be with his wife Jessica, who suffered a miscarriage while carrying the couple's first son. They have two daughters.

Beltran went 0-for-4 and whiffed twice Friday.

"Obviously, I am sure he is out there with a heavy heart,'' said Girardi, who used the switch-hitter as the designated hitter. "I would have used him [Thursday] if I felt there was a spot for a pinch-hitter. Sometimes for athletes or anyone it's good to get back out there, doing what you are used to doing.''

Hiroki Kuroda is 4-1 with a 2.89 ERA in his last seven starts.

The Yankees will be represented in the Dominican Republic on Sunday, when Cuban refugee Yasmani Tomas will work out for multiple clubs at the San Francisco Giants' complex in Boca Chica.

It is not known if the Yankees have set up a private workout for the 6-foot-1, 240-pound outfielder, who has been cleared to talk to MLB clubs as a free agent.

Industry voices believe the price tag could go as high as $100 million, which would top the seven-year, $72.5 million the Red Sox recently gave outfielder Rusney Castillo. The Yankees didn't make a bid on Castillo.

If infielder Jose Pirela appears in a game this year he would be the 57th player used by the Yankees and that would set a franchise record. Recalled last week when Martin Prado underwent an appendectomy, Pirela hasn't played yet.
