Jete Week has a good chance of ending with the Yankees eliminated from the race for the AL's second wild card.
Until Tuesday night Derek Jeter's flickering hope to extend his final season to October wasn't mathematically dead.
However, a 5-4 loss to the AL East champion Orioles in front of a Yankee Stadium crowd of 43,201 means a Yankees' loss or Royals' victory eliminates the Yankees. That bad news could come as early as Wednesday and will send the Yankees into a dark October for the second straight season.
If the Yankees are eliminated Wednesday, Jeter's final game in The Bronx Thursday wouldn't mean anything and be only the second game in his Hall of Fame career played after the Yankees were no longer in the hunt.
Jeter, who started the game in a 9-for-20 (.450) hot streak, went 1-for-5 with a two-out, infield single in the seventh that was followed by Brian McCann's 23rd homer off lefty Andrew Miller and cut the Orioles' lead to 5-4.
When Brett Gardner reached on a two-out, infield single in the ninth Jeter came to the plate as the potential winning run against Zach Britton. A called strike and a check swing strike put Jeter in a 0-2 hole and Britton finished Jeter with a swing and a miss.
The Yankees reduced the deficit to 5-2 in the sixth when Stephen Drew's bases-loaded fly to right field scored McCann. But Brad Brach whiffed Ichiro Suzuki and stranded three.
Brandon McCarthy lost for the first time since Aug. 31. In 5 ¹/₃ innings he allowed five runs and 11 hits. He is 7-5 in 14 starts with the Yankees.
McCarthy, a free agent after the season, is in the final season of a two-year deal worth $15.5 million and paying him $9 million this season. The Phillies have scouted him extensively and McCarthy (10-15) is sure to get multiple offers. The Yankees would have an interest, but if they get interested in Max Scherzer, Jon Lester or James Shields, they might not have the money for McCarthy, a 10-game winner for the first time in his career.
