Derek Jeter ran onto the field before Sunday's game against the Royals, just as he has to start just about every game of his career.
This time, though, he ended up out there by himself.
"I didn't know no one was behind me," Jeter said after the Yankees lost to the Royals, 2-0.
His teammates conspired to stay behind in the dugout to let the Stadium crowd cheer the shortstop once again following the ceremony in his honor.
"I do the same thing every game, so I was unaware of the fact that no one was behind me," Jeter said. "Chase [Headley] and [Martin] Prado are usually next to me for the anthem and when I saw they weren't there, I turned around and saw no one was out there. My first thought was that I messed up and ran out there too early on accident."
That wasn't the case.
"It was just another little way to kind of pay a little of respect to him," said Headley, the third baseman who came up with the idea and ran it by some teammates.
"The day was about him," Headley said. "He usually leads us on the field and today was a day maybe he could have a little more time out there so the fans could celebrate him more than just the Yankees."
Mark Teixeira agreed.
"I know they're always cheering for us, but a lot of the time it feels like they're just cheering for Derek, anyway," the first baseman said. "So I thought it was a good idea, and I made sure to keep everybody back."
Perhaps they took the idea a bit too far, because the offense did nothing and the Yankees made a pair of errors that led to both runs scored by Kansas City in the loss.
