How ugly, and how soon, this could turn for the Giants

The 0-6 start last year was ugly.

The 35-14 blowout loss Monday night to — of all teams — the Lions, was even uglier.

But if the Giants really want to see what ugly truly looks and feels like, then they only need to come out flat and confused and stiff yet again Sunday at MetLife Stadium against the Cardinals.

The reaction from the crowd will be a strain of ugly even Freddy Krueger or the Elephant Man couldn't touch.

"If the offense is ready to go and everyone is on the same page, then it'll be positive and our fans will respond," Victor Cruz said Friday. "I don't have any doubt about that. Our fans are great."

Cruz probably took the high road because he didn't want to contemplate the opposite of that, which will no doubt be a MetLife crowd out for blood.

Giants fans are spoiled, of course, having enjoyed two Super Bowl trophies in just the past seven years. Two losses in the AFC Championship Game in the same span are the high point to keep Jets fans warm.

But the ticket prices, the PSLs, the sky-high parking charges and just the mere hassle of getting to the Meadowlands don't leave most fans in a great mood entering the stadium even when Big Blue are winning.

When you combine that with consecutive years of no playoffs and a new offense that already looks DOA, the Giants should feel lucky that fans have no way of making snowballs if they stumble out of the gate against Arizona.

This already had the look of a no-excuses situation for the Giants even before they got the news late Friday that Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer has a bum shoulder and is questionable to play.

Sure, the Cardinals have Larry Fitzgerald and one of the best secondaries in the NFL in Patrick Peterson, safety Tyrann Mathieu (probable after missing Week 1 following his return from knee surgery) and former Jet Antonio Cromartie. And their 18-17 comeback victory over the Chargers on Monday night was certainly impressive.

But forcing Arizona to travel to the East Coast (where the Cardinals are notoriously bad) on a short week was a gift for the Giants long before it looked like Drew Stanton might start in Palmer's place after Stanton reportedly took almost all of the repetitions in practice this week.

That would be the same Drew Stanton the Jets infamously let go in 2012 one week after signing him so they could make room for some Tim Tebow guy who isn't even in football anymore.

That also would be the same Drew Stanton who hasn't thrown a pass in a regular-season game since Dec. 19, 2010.

If Stanton ends up starting and the Giants still can't come out on top, then January is probably safe again for their fans to plan something other than buying a ticket for a playoff game.

If the Giants don't rebound this week, the wrath in their own locker room next week might be worse than the one from the stands Sunday.

Tom Coughlin already sounded as if he is at the end of his rope after Ben McAdoo's new West Coast scheme resulted in just 197 total yards against a banged-up Detroit defense.

Coughlin resembled a thirsty man in the desert after practice Friday afternoon. The league's oldest coach was desperate for anything Sunday — heck, even a long drive with some first downs bunched together — to tell him there is light at the end of the tunnel for Eli Manning and the offense that isn't another oncoming train.

"Well, it certainly would help to have some success," Coughlin said in response to another question about the offensive ineptitude. "It certainly would help."

Coughlin's definition of success is a victory. Anything other than that will leave the Giants feeling mighty unwelcome in their own house.
