CINCINNATI — Dilson Herrera isn't old enough to be legally served a drink with his teammates after a game, but the Mets are thankful hitting has no such age restrictions.
The 20-year-old Herrera has performed about as reasonably well as the organization could have hoped when it promoted him from Double-A Binghamton nine days ago to replace injured Daniel Murphy at second base.
"He is doing something that is very tough," David Wright said before the Mets lost 2-1 to the Reds on Saturday.
By "tough," Wright was referring to the fact Herrera — who is batting .267 with two homers and seven RBIs in 30 at-bats — didn't have the benefit of a stopover at Triple-A, where he could be around players who had played in the major leagues. Wright had that opportunity for about a month in 2004, before he was promoted to the Mets.
"Although you want to get to the big leagues, I thought that Triple-A step was big for me because I got to pick some guys' brains about the big leagues," Wright said. "The impressive thing has been [Herrera] didn't have that luxury and he comes here and the way he carries himself.
"He gets it where he's done everything you ask him to do, the way he carries himself. He's trying to constantly learn and he's been fantastic."
Even so, Murphy could be within days of returning from the disabled list and reclaiming his job at second base, and the Mets aren't prepared to give Herrera a shot at shortstop — a position at which he has limited experience.
"[Shortstop] has not been brought up," manager Terry Collins said. "The whole thing was to give [Wilmer Flores] this opportunity, so you're muddying the waters by throwing someone else out there. I'm not here to run a tryout camp. I'm here to win some games. That's important for me, to make sure we get the right people out there."
But the Mets have seen enough at least to have a positive impression of Herrera should Murphy be traded this offseason.
Herrera, who speaks limited English, told The Post he "probably" will play winter ball in the Caribbean to better position himself for a shot at making the team in spring training next year. On Saturday, he delivered an RBI single in the second inning that accounted for the Mets' only run.
"We're all very impressed with the offensive side so far," Collins said. "He's got great base, great balance at the plate and certainly he's got some great strength. He's showing us he will use the field to hit, which also is something you like to see out of a young hitter.
"He's got to obviously learn how to be a little more selective at times, but I like a lot of things that he does offensively.
Defensively, I think he's learned the speed of the game here, it's a lot faster than it is in the Eastern League, due to No. 1 the fields, they are so well kept here. … So there are some things he's got to learn, but I think that's going to be easy stuff to get."
