West Coast offense non-existent in Giants’ first preseason game

CANTON, Ohio — No one should have expected the Giants to unveil their new offense Sunday night and for it to look like a thing of beauty. The West Coast attack wasn't built and mastered in a day, or a spring and part of a summer, and there's plenty of work to be done before the operation runs smoothly.

There were the predictable bumps and stops and starts in the first trial run. Eli Manning and Co. got two series against the Bills starting defense and did virtually nothing, got a final series against the Buffalo backups and got in the end zone. The last impression was a good one, but what it means remains to be seen as the Giants opened their extended five-game preseason schedule with a 17-13 victory in front of 22,052 in the Hall of Fame Game at Fawcett Stadium.

The goal is for Manning to complete 70 percent of his passes — it's really more of a best-case scenario, not a truly realistic standard for Manning to hit — and in his first crack in the new offense he went 6-of-7 for only 43 yards. It was not exactly a crisp night's work, though.

The one great big negative was a Manning sack and lost fumble. The most eye-opening development was the rushing of rookie Andre Williams (7 carries, 48 yards, TD), a fourth-round pick — and possible draft-day steal — who looks NFL ready.

"Obviously, to get a touchdown on the third series was nice,'' Manning said. "We didn't get off to a great start — had a fumble we can't have. That's going to hurt us. The first game back, you're going to work out some of the kinks, get used to getting hit again, a real rush. I thought there were some improvements. It was a good start."

The best throw of the night belonged to Ryan Nassib, who helped himself in his bid to win the backup quarterback job. His sailing missile found rookie Corey Washington for a leaping 73-yard, catch-and-run touchdown to give the Giants a 17-13 lead with 13:18 remaining. Nassib was 7-of-12 for 139 yards for a rating of 126.7.

Once the Giants took the field for real, the summer offensive growing pains turned to full-grown pains.

The first play ever called by first-year coordinator Ben McAdoo was a quick pass to the right side, but the timing was poor and the ball glanced off the hands of Jerrel Jernigan. The first series ended with a three-and-out and the second was much worse.

The goal this season is to use more of an up-tempo approach and the no-huddle was unveiled for series No. 2. After one first down, Manning was flushed out of the pocket by Mario Williams despite the Bills defensive end getting held by right tackle Justin Pugh. That allowed defensive tackle Kyle Williams to burst past left guard Geoff Schwartz and launch himself at Manning, who was sacked and fumbled for a loss of 21 yards, with former Giants linebacker Keith Rivers making the recovery for the Bills on the Giants 22-yard line.

No way the Giants wanted to pull their starters coming off such a dismal showing, and Tom Coughlin gave both starting units three series. That was good news for the offense, as this time McAdoo stuck to the ground and was rewarded by some pounding work from Rashad Jennings and Williams, a beefy 1-2 punch. They were the workhorses on an 80-yard drive — Williams had 37 of them — and followed fullback Henry Hynoski's block on Williams' 3-yard touchdown run. The drive, though, came against the Bills' second-string defense. Presumably, in the Sept. 8 regular-season opener, the Lions will keep their starters in the entire game.

On defense, the Giants starters had little trouble with E J Manuel and the Bills. The only points allowed came via a 30-yard field goal by Dan Carpenter after Manning's fumble put the Bills on the Giants' 22-yard line and it would have been a shutout if linebacker Jacquian Williams was able to hold onto what should have been an interception.
