BALTIMORE — The Yankees' tragic number for elimination in the AL East relative to the first-place Orioles is 38.
Any combination of Yankees losses and Orioles wins totaling 38 will leave the Yankees searching for the second wild-card ticket into October.
And even that back-door entrance is looking like it won't open for a team that was given an early two-run lead Monday night and let it slip into the unseasonably cool Inner Harbor air and a light rain.
At this point in the middle of the fifth month of a six-month season, all signs point to a second straight dark October in The Bronx.
Three runs in the first two innings after scoring once Saturday and Sunday wasn't enough for the Yankees to avoid dropping a 11-3 decision to the Orioles in front of 34,018 at Camden Yards.
The Yankees' third straight loss pushed them a season-high seven games out of first place with nine games remaining with the Orioles, who are 7-3 against the Yankees this season.
The Orioles got a go-ahead homer from Chris Davis in the fifth, a two-run shot from Nelson Cruz in the seventh and a three-run blast from Jonathan Schoop in the eighth.
Chris Capuano took the loss to fall to 0-2 in four Yankee starts. In six innings, the journeyman lefty allowed four runs and six hits, one of which was a two-run blast by Davis that erased a 3-2 Yankees lead. Bud Norris, who watched his infield hand the Yankees two runs in the second, was the winner to improve to 10-7.
"These games are very important. We are six games back with [45] to go,'' Joe Girardi said before the game.
The victory may have been be costly for the O's, who lost third baseman and No. 2 hitter Manny Machado in the third inning with what the Orioles said was a sprained right knee. He is scheduled to be reevaluated on Tuesday.
The Yankees scored twice in the second when the O's botched a first-and-third play in which both runners scored and the hosts were charged with two errors on one play.
With Nick Markakis on first, one out and the Yankees leading 3-2 in the fifth, Davis, who replaced Machado, took a 2-2 pitch that looked like a strike. However, plate umpire Will Little called it a ball. That had Joe Girardi's head shaking, and Davis hit the next pitch over the right-field fence to give the hosts a 4-3 advantage.
The Orioles, who have won eight of 11, added three runs in the seventh off Adam Warren. Markakis doubled with one out and scored on Adam Jones' two-out double. One pitch after right fielder Martin Prado failed to glove Cruz' foul fly near the seats, Cruz launched his 31st homer to left-center for a four-run bulge.
Schoop, the No. 9 hitter, crushed a three-run homer off Chase Whitley in the eighth for a 10-3 cushion.
After getting blanked Saturday and scoring one run Sunday against the Indians in The Bronx, the Yankees scored three early runs, with some big help from the sloppy-fielding Orioles.
Brett Gardner greeted Norris with a game-starting triple and scored on Jeter's ground ball to the left side of the infield.
After the O's tied it with a Machado double and Cruz sacrifice fly in the home first, the Yankees scored twice in the second when the Orioles turned into a Little League team.
With Carlos Beltran on third and Chase Headley at first and no outs, Headley broke for second and stopped midway.
Caught in a rundown as Beltran danced off third, Headley stayed alive long enough for first baseman Steve Pearce to throw to Machado at third as Beltran bolted for home.
Machado's throw would have been in plenty of time to get Beltran but it hit Beltran's helmet and glanced into foul territory behind home plate as Beltran scored. When Norris retrieved the ball and flipped it to catcher Caleb Joseph, the catcher didn't see the ball. Machado raced to get the ball as Headley broke to the plate, but Machado's throw hit Norris' glove and the ball fell to the ground as Headley scored.
