Robertson blows it in the ninth as Yankees fall to lowly Astros

So much for feasting on the Astros.

The Yankees opened a crucial homestand against two of the worst teams in the American League with a crushing 7-4 loss to the Astros on Tuesday in The Bronx.

David Robertson surrendered a three-run homer to Chris Carter with one out in the ninth after issuing two straight walks and falling behind Carter 3-0. Carter had struck out three times, but crushed his 17th homer since July 1 and 30th of the season way out in left.

The Yankees, who will welcome in the lowly White Sox on Friday, had tied the game in the sixth, then wasted a chance to take the lead in the eighth when Jacoby Ellsbury was thrown out at the plate on a Carlos Beltran grounder to short with the infield in and one out.

Though the Yankees steadfastly refuse to push the panic button, manager Joe Girardi said before the game his team must turn things around soon.

"I said six weeks ago we have to do that every week," Girardi said of winning with more frequency. "Win series and win games. It gets to a point where there's not a ton of room for error. These are very important games."

Now there's less room for error, even as the manager disagreed with the notion the Yankees needed to go on an extended winning streak to get where they want to go.

"I don't think you have to have a long winning streak, but I think you have to win series," Girardi said. "If you get fortunate to sweep some series, that would obviously help."

And having the Astros in town would seem to be a good place to start.
Looking for a third consecutive win after five losses in a row, that didn't happen.

Ellsbury reached to start the bottom of the eighth with a hard shot at second baseman Jose Altuve that was generously ruled a hit.

After Ellsbury was thrown out at the plate, Martin Prado, whose double in the sixth tied the game, singled to left.

But Brian McCann's fly to deep center was tracked down by Dexter Fowler.

While Girardi and his team talk about making a run to the playoffs, they hardly have looked like they're ready for one on the field.

After Houston scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a two-run lead, Prado delivered his biggest hit as a Yankee, a two-run double with one out that tied the game — but the Yankees couldn't add to it.

The Yankees got a scoreless inning from Shawn Kelley in the seventh and another from Dellin Betances in the eighth before Robertson's meltdown in the ninth.

Chris Capuano pitched well until the sixth and after he allowed the tying run to score, Adam Warren surrendered a two-run single to pinch-hitter Marwin Gonzalez to give Houston a 4-2 lead. For a Yankees team that hadn't scored more than four runs in a game since a 10-6 win over Cleveland on Aug. 8, a two-run deficit seemed almost insurmountable.

The Yankees started the game three back of Detroit and Seattle for the second wild card and Girardi declined to put a number on how many wins they would need to reach the postseason.

"There's too many teams involved and it's too unpredictable," Girardi said. "Our focus is just on us winning games and playing well."

The lead McCann provided with a two-run homer in the fourth didn't last long, as Houston cut it to 2-1 in the fifth. Gregorio Petit ripped a double to left — his second off Capuano — and Robbie Grossman followed with a single to right. Petit slid home just before Ichiro Suzuki's throw got to McCann.

Grossman advanced to second on the throw and Altuve walked, but Capuano averted further trouble by striking out Carter for a third time.
