Prado the walk-off hero as Yanks win thriller

The Yankees have been waiting for some big hits with their season in danger of slipping away.

On Friday, they finally got one.

Martin Prado delivered a bases-loaded, game-winning single with two outs in the ninth as the Yankees won their second straight, 4-3, over the White Sox in The Bronx.

Ichiro Suzuki started the game-winning rally with a leadoff single against Daniel Webb.

Brett Gardner bunted Ichiro to second.

Derek Jeter lined out to center on a ball that looked as if it might drop.

The White Sox walked Jacoby Ellsbury intentionally to bring up Mark Teixeira, but Webb walked him, as well.

And Prado, who had homered earlier in the game, came through again with a single up the middle.

And while the players admit there's some urgency, Teixeira put it bluntly on Friday.

"I hope we turn it around," Teixeira said of the offense before the game. "If not, we're going to be watching in October."

A win didn't seem to be in the cards early on when, just three batters into the game, Shane Greene and the Yankees were down, 3-0.

After consecutive singles to right by Alejandro De Aza and Carlos Sanchez, rookie phenom Jose Abreu blasted a three-run shot to left-center, just over the outstretched glove of a leaping Brett Gardner.

That brought pitching coach Larry Rothschild to the mound, and after Adam Dunn flied to right, Avisail Garcia scorched one to the track in center, where Ellsbury hauled it in.

Greene got in trouble again in the inning by walking Conor Gillaspie and giving up a single to Alexei Ramirez, but he recovered to strike out Jordan Danks.

The Yankees got back in the game in the bottom of the third, thanks to Prado's two-out, two-run homer to left.

They tied it in the fifth.

Chicago starter John Danks hit Gardner with a pitch and Jeter singled. Ellsbury doubled to right, scoring Gardner and sending Jeter to third.

With runners on second and third, the Yankees had a golden chance to go ahead for the first time, but Teixeira hit a check-swing grounder to first, so Jeter stayed at third.

Prado struck out and Brian McCann flied to the track in right to end the threat.

Despite the rough beginning, Greene pitched into the sixth inning, when he hit Gillaspie with a pitch and gave up a single to Ramirez, but Shawn Kelley put out the fire — with some help from Joe McEwing.

Kelley struck out the first two batters he faced before De Aza singled to left and McEwing, the third-base coach, inexplicably sent Gillaspie. Gardner's throw home beat him easily and after White Sox manager Robin Ventura challenged that Francisco Cervelli was blocking the plate without the ball, the out call was upheld, keeping the game tied.

Dellin Betances provided 1 ²/₃ innings of scoreless relief before giving way to David Robertson to start the ninth.

Robertson, who gave up a game-winning, three-run homer against Houston on Tuesday, rebounded with a perfect inning to improve to 2-4.

Before the game, Joe Girardi said one of the things he liked about Greene was his ability to pitch through adversity.
"We've seen him overcome some things and get back on track," Girardi said.

Clearly, that was the case again on Friday — and not just because of the first inning.

The right-hander gave up a pair of singles in the second before striking out the side in the third and having no problem in the fourth.

A leadoff single by Sanchez and a one-out walk to Dunn brought Rothschild out again, but Greene got his second double play in as many innings.
