Anybody got a number for Kei Igawa?
Considering how the Yankees are plucking pitchers off scrap heaps and turning them into viable arms, maybe they can still get something out of Igawa, who with Carl "American Idle'' Pavano is one of the biggest Bomber pitching busts in recent history.
Working with pitching coach Larry Rothschild, Brandon McCarthy has gone from awful to unbeatable. Chris Capuano was hurling in the pitching-poor Rockies' minor league system when acquired and has been more than serviceable.
Friday night, the Yankees turned to Esmil Rogers, a right-hander they claimed on waivers last week from Toronto, an organization that was using him as a starter in Triple-A.
After two relief outings, Rogers was inserted in the rotation to take David Phelps' spot and helped the Yankees to a sloppy and tedious 10-6 victory over the Indians in front of 43,972 at Yankee Stadium.
In five innings, Rogers allowed a run and four hits.
It was the latest solid outing by a Yankees starter. In the last five games, in which the Yankees are 4-1, the starters are 3-0 with a tidy 1.11 ERA.
Carlos Beltran turned a 5-2 game into 9-2 with a grand slam in the seventh inning. It was Beltran's 14th homer of the season and 11th career grand slam. Beltran finished with five RBIs, two shy of his career high.
It was the Yankees' sixth win in seven games and kept them five games back of the sizzling AL East-leading Orioles, who have won eight of 11. They remained one-half game behind the Royals for the second wild card.
However, the win had a downside, since Brian McCann left in the sixth inning with a mild concussion and is listed as day to day. McCann took a foul tip from Mike Aviles off his mask in the third inning and left for pinch-hitter Francisco Cervelli.
Derek Jeter went 1-for-4 and tied Honus Wagner for sixth place on the all-time hit list with 3,430.
The Yankees scored five runs off Trevor Bauer in the first inning, when Beltran, Chase Headley, Stephen Drew and Martin Prado drove in runs and Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis committed an error.
Four Indians runs in the seventh against Shawn Kelley and Adam Warren made the game interesting, reducing the Yankees' lead from 10-2 to 10-6.
After Rogers' five innings, David Huff replaced him and didn't make it out of the sixth, when three of the first four batters he faced got hits that produced a run. After Chris Dickerson fanned for the second out, manager Joe Girardi called for Kelley to face Jose Ramirez, and Ichiro Suzuki ended the rally with a running catch toward right-center.
Bauer, the Cleveland starter, was awful in 3 ¹/₃ innings, allowing those five first-inning runs, six hits, walking four and hitting a batter in the brief outing.
