The Yankees minor-leaguer whose homer astonished Reggie Jackson

MINNEAPOLIS — Yankees prospect Peter O'Brien has impressed this season with his loud bat. He has blasted 29 home runs, 10 at Single-A Tampa and 19 at Double-A Trenton.

That was good enough to earn him a trip to the Futures Game. The USA Futures team beat the World squad, 3-2, Sunday at Target Field.

"It's such an honor and a blessing to be here,'' O'Brien said. He is now playing first base at Trenton and is hopeful of a Triple-A call-up and maybe even a promotion to the Yankees. He also has caught and played third base and right field. As for his power, he said he has made a key adjustment in his swing.

"I've learned to understand my swing a little bit more and I've kind of evolved where I can really drive the ball,'' said O'Brien, who struck out twice Sunday. "What I'm trying to do is put my best swing on a pitch in the strike zone.''

Reggie Jackson came up to him after a long home run at Trenton and told O'Brien that was the most impressive home run he had ever seen hit in the minor leagues.

O'Brien, 24, was born in Miami.

"My dad is American and my mom is Cuban,'' O'Brien said. His parents were at the Futures Game and it was a special day in many ways. His mom is a cancer survivor.

"My mom is 100 percent healthy now, thank God,'' O'Brien said.

There was a special day, too, earlier this year in Tampa.

O'Brien was scheduled to play right field, but was told to make sure he was at the plate for the ceremonial first pitch. It was Cancer Awareness Day and the Tampa Yankees had arranged for Mercedes O'Brien to throw out the first pitch.

"It was really nice, a special day,'' O'Brien said. "I gave her a big hug afterwards.''

Yankees Single-A right-hander Luis Severino, 20, fired a 12-pitch (nine strikes) scoreless fourth for the World team, including a strikeout of Rangers slugger Joey Gallo, who later crushed a two-run home run.

With Travis d'Arnaud playing so well Kevin Plawecki gives the Mets' catching depth.

"There's still a lot for me to learn,'' said Plawecki, who drove in the first USA run with a ground out. "I'm two weeks into my Triple-A career. All I can focus on is day-by-day and enjoy the ride, time flies. Keep having fun with the game.''
