Whitley’s gem, McCann’s clutch hit lead Yankees past Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Yankees bleed for runs — even when they score three with one pass of a bat through the strike zone.

The slumping Brian McCann delivered a three-run double early Friday night that gave the Yankees a three-run lead over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Nevertheless, Jeremy Guthrie cut the Yankees off after McCann's opposite-field arrow. Fortunately for the visitors, neophyte right-hander Chase Whitley delivered his best big league outing in five starts to help the Yankees to a 4-2 victory that was witnessed by 23,418.

Whitley, who registered his first major league victory and is 1-0, retired the final eight batters he faced and turned the two-run lead over to Dellin Betances for the home eighth.

In seven innings, Whitley allowed two runs, five hits and didn't walk a batter.

To start the eighth, Betances fanned Lorenzo Cain with a 3-2 fastball that was clocked at 99-mph on the scoreboard. Next up was Mike Moustakas, who struck out on an 84-mph breaking pitch. Alcides Escobar jumped on a first-pitch, 97-mph fastball for a double before Betances broke Nori Aoki's bat with a 98-mph heater that resulted in a ground ball to Mark Teixeira for the final out.

David Robertson recorded the final three outs for his 14th save in 16 chances.

After the three-run third, Guthrie blanked the Yankees across the following four innings and allowed just one baserunner. That was Brendan Ryan's single in the fourth, but he was caught attempting to swipe third with one out.

The 31-29 Yankees' second victory in six games enabled them to stay six games back of the AL East-leading Blue Jays, who beat the Cardinals for their sixth straight win and ninth in 11 games.

The victory also opened a 10-game, three-city trip on a positive note.

After giving up a run in the fifth that reduced the Yankees' lead to 4-2, Whitley worked a quick sixth. It was the first time in five big league starts the right-hander recorded an out in the sixth inning.

While the Yankees batted in the top of the seventh, their bullpen was quiet and Whitley rewarded manager Joe Girardi's faith with a clean inning.

The Yankees threatened in the eighth when Brett Gardner greeted lefty reliever Francisley Bueno with a single and moved to second on Carlos Beltran's grounder to the right side. With the count, 3-1, on Teixeira, Bueno issued the fourth ball on purpose.

That brought McCann to the plate, and he popped up to the left side. Yangervis Solarte's stress-free fly to center kept the Yankees' lead at 4-2.

The Royals' Alex Gordon opened the fifth with a single to center, stole second and scored on Cain's hit to center. When the Yankees left second uncovered — second baseman Brian Roberts broke late for first with Teixeira in the cutoff position and Ryan, playing short, on the outfield grass — Cain pulled into second for a double.

Whitley made sure the gaffe didn't cut into the 4-2 lead by getting Moustakas on a grounder and Escobar on a pop to short right.

Guthrie gave up consecutive singles to Jacoby Ellsbury and Gardner to open the third and they advanced a base when Beltran grounded to the right side. Guthrie, who has a history of plunking Teixeira, did it again to load the bases. He drilled Teixeira in the back.

McCann took a 1-2 fastball clocked at 94-mph the other way into left field that cleared the bases and gave the Yankees a 4-1 advantage. Guthrie stranded McCann at third by retiring Solarte on a routine fly to left and striking out Ichiro Suzuki.

Whitley took the mound for the home second with a 1-0 lead he promptly gave back. Gordon doubled with one out and scored on Salvador Perez's single to left. Whitley ended the inning by feeding Cain a 5-4-3 double play ball.

Roberts' two-out single in the second scored Teixeira with the game's first run and came after Ichiro smoked a liner to center that was caught.

Teixeira led off with a soft single to right and Solarte drew a one-out walk. Ichiro followed with a liner right at Cain in center for the second out. Roberts then bounced a 0-2 pitch up the middle into center field.
