CC Sabathia is about to take some big steps toward returning to the Yankees' starting rotation.
"I am going to Tampa [Sunday], throw batting practice Tuesday and pitch in a [minor league] game Saturday,'' Sabathia said following a 36-pitch bullpen session Saturday morning at Yankee Stadium.
"It was a full bullpen [session], like I throw before games,'' said Sabathia who hasn't pitched since May 10 because of an inflamed right knee. "There were no problems. My arm feels good, my knee feels good.''
Sabathia has been wearing a brace on the knee for workouts and said he will continue to pitch with it when he comes off the disabled list.
That he is less than a week away from working in a game has lifted Sabathia's spirits.
"I was sitting around here feeling sorry for myself and watching the team grind, it's tough,'' Sabathia said before the Yankees' 6-1 loss the Orioles. "I feel better that there is a little light where I can see hopefully get back out there and help them.''
Sabathia said he doesn't know how much time he will need to get ready but does have a goal in mind.
"I am trying to go as fast as possible. Hopefully it's not five starts so we will see,'' said Sabathia, who has a 3-4 record with a bloated 5.28 ERA in eight starts. "I feel good. I am optimistic I will be ready to go.''
Michael Pineda's return from a terres major muscle problem in his back has been delayed again. Pineda, who hasn't pitched in a big league game since April 23, underwent an MRI exam, and the results didn't lead to him being cleared to begin throwing.
"He still has a trace of inflammation, so we will give him one more week off and he will start throwing next Saturday,'' manager Joe Girardi said.
Considering how long Pineda has been idle, he likely will require a full second spring training — six weeks — before being ready. And that's if he encounters no setbacks.
Brett Gardner fouled a ball off his right instep in the third inning and ran awkwardly to first base on a ground out to the right side. When Gardner got to the dugout, trainer Steve Donohue talked to him about it and Gardner pointed to the area.
Gardner stayed in the game and struck out in his final two at-bats.
Just in case David Huff's right ankle, which was hit by a ball off Nick Markakis' bat Friday night, wouldn't allow him to work in relief Saturday, the Yankees had Shane Greene on call and in the New York area. But X-rays on Huff's ankle were negative and the left-hander told the team he was ready if needed. Huff didn't enter the game, but was up in the bullpen.
"He is OK. We were a little bit concerned,'' Girardi said of Huff. "He got here early for treatment. Obviously, they X-rayed it and the X-rays came back negative, and he is available.''
Kelly Johnson was at third base after not starting Friday night because of some bruised fingers after getting hit on the left hand trying to bunt Thursday night.
His throwing error in the fifth led to one of the two Orioles runs being unearned. He also went 0-for-4.
Tino Martinez became the newest member of Monument Park on Saturday when he was given a plaque beyond the center field wall. Yankees Hall of Famer Goose Gossage will receive his plaque in Monument Park Sunday during Old-Timers' Day.
Mark Teixeira's home run in the fourth extended his hitting streak to 10 games, during which he is 11-for-37 (.297).
With a day game after a night game, Girardi started Francisco Cervelli behind the plate. It was Cervelli's first big league action since suffering a right hamstring injury running the bases in Boston on April 13. He went 1-for-3.
