Phelps comes up big as Yanks sweep 1st-place Blue Jays

The back end of the Yankees' rotation houses Vidal Nuno and Chase Whitley. Nuno is hanging onto a spot by the slimmest of margins and Whitley's stuff as a starter remains a question even though he has pitched very well in the new role.

David Phelps, the middle man in the five-starter setup, delivered a second straight solid outing Thursday night, helping the Yankees to a sweep of the AL East-leading Blue Jays with a 6-4 victory before a Yankee Stadium crowd of 40,169.

Phelps went seven innings, allowed two runs and six hits. In his last two outings, the right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA. The two good outings came after Phelps had lost four straight. Overall he is 3-4.

The Yankees' third straight win over the Blue Jays cut Toronto's advantage to 1 ½ games and pulled the Yankees even in the loss column. The Blue Jays have dropped a franchise-high 16 straight games in The Bronx and 25 of their last 27 games here.

Carlos Beltran drove in two runs, Jacoby Ellsbury stole two bases, had two hits and scored twice. Brian Roberts went 1-for-2, walked twice, scored a run and stole two bags.

Before the game, Joe Girardi said he wouldn't use Dellin Betances for a third straight game. As it turned out David Robertson, who worked Tuesday and Wednesday, wasn't available either. After Matt Thornton got the final out of the eighth, Adam Warren, who threw two innings Wednesday, started throwing in the bullpen.

Girardi left the left-handed Thornton in to face the lefty-swinging Josh Thole, who grounded out to the right side. Lefty Colby Rasmus singled to right and Girardi called for Warren.

Warren retired pinch-hitter Munenori Kawasaki on a fly to center for the second out and got Jose Reyes on a grounder to second to post his second save of the season.

Girardi summoned Shawn Kelley from the bullpen to start the eighth. He walked Jose Bautista with one out and then watched Edwin Encarnacion launch a two-run homer to left that cut the Yankees' lead to 6-4. After getting Dioner Navarro to ground out, Kelley left for Thornton who popped up Juan Francisco for the final out.

Third baseman Kelly Johnson left the game in the sixth inning with the count full after fouling a bunt attempt off the fingers on his left hand. X-rays were negative.

Beltran's ground-rule double in the fifth inning scored Ellsbury to hike the Yankees' lead to 4-2. Derek Jeter added an RBI groundout in the sixth and Yangervis Solarte walked with the bases loaded in the seventh to hand a 6-2 lead to the bullpen.

After umpire Jordan Baker got a call at second wrong in the first inning that was changed, first-base ump Chris Conroy botched a call in the fourth that was overturned without the use of replay.

Conroy ruled Encarnacion was out for interfering with Mark Teixeira while he was attempting to catch Navarro's pop up. Conroy ruled the Blue Jays made two outs on the play. Manager John Gibbons argued, the four umps talked and Navarro was put on first. That's where he stayed because Juan Francisco struck out swinging and Eric Kratz looked at a 1-2 pitch clocked at 89 mph.

The Yankees' inability to tack on runs in the first two innings cost them in the third when the Blue Jays tied the score, 2-2, on Melky Cabrera's two-run, two-out homer off Phelps.

Brett Gardner led off the first with a double off the right-field wall, moved to third on Jeter's infield single and scored on Ellsbury's fly to left.

Beltran forced Brian McCann at second for the first out of the second inning but because second baseman Steve Tolleson bobbled the ball the Blue Jays lost a chance to turn a double play. Ichiro Suzuki singled and Brian Roberts walked to load the bases for Kelly Johnson. His fly to right scored Beltran.

The Yankee eked ahead 3-2 in the third when Ellsbury led off with a single, stole second, went to third on Teixeira's single to right and scored on Beltran's sacrifice fly.
