More Mets hitting woes as they fall in 13 innings to Brewers

Terry Collins changed the Mets' lineup again Thursday, in a seemingly never-ending pursuit of getting the offense going.

Before their 5-1, 13-inning loss to the Brewers, the manager admitted his creativity had yet to pay off.

"So far it hasn't," Collins said with a laugh. "The idea is you've got to try something. It's trying to find a lineup each night that's going to score some runs."

The streak continued, as the Mets lost for the eighth time in nine games.

While the game was decided in the 13th on Jonathan Lucroy's two-run homer off Carlos Torres, the Mets blew it two innings earlier, when they couldn't take advantage of multiple opportunities to finish the game.

David Wright led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk, stole second and then got to third on Lucas Duda's slow roller. A walk to Chris Young, an intentional pass to Curtis Granderson (who didn't start because of a sore left calf) loaded the bases, but Wilmer Flores grounded into a fielder's choice and Anthony Recker struck out looking on a ball that appeared low.

Recker was ejected by home plate umpire Angel Hernandez when he argued the questionable third-strike call.

The loss wasted another excellent effort by Jon Niese, who gave up one run in 7 ²/₃ innings, but Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse was just as good.

Lohse retired the first nine batters he faced before Daniel Murphy, moved to the top of the order Thursday in place of Ruben Tejada, opened the bottom of the fourth with a single to center and reached third on Carlos Gomez's two-base error.

Bobby Abreu knocked Murphy in with a sacrifice fly to left.

Tejada, the leadoff hitter the previous two games, was replaced at short by Wilmer Flores. Without the injured Eric Young Jr., who played his first rehab game Thursday, and Juan Lagares, Collins was forced to maneuver. But for most of their latest loss, the offense went stagnant again.

The Mets finally threatened again in in the ninth against Will Smith.

After pinch-hitter Eric Campbell struck out looking and Wright popped to second, Duda walked to prolong the inning and Chris Young reached on an infield single. But because of a double-switch, the pitcher's spot came up next and Tejada came on to hit and grounded to third.

The Mets got a pair of runners on again an inning later, but Campbell's slow roller to third ended it.

Jenrry Mejia, who entered in the 10th, left before the start of the 11th with back spasms and was replaced by Gonzalez Germen.

"I don't think it's as bad as everyone is making it out to be [for the Mets]," Granderson said before the game. "You've got to look at everything around you. … Obviously, at the end of the day it's about winning and losing, but in terms where we are in comparison to everyone in our division — which is most important — we're still right in the thick of things. The standings are the only thing that really matters."

Granderson also insisted it wasn't time to panic in Queens.

"We're still in a good spot," he said. "It could definitely be a lot worse than this."

He was at least half right.
