Andrew Cuomo’s split-the-baby lieutenant governor

Gov. Cuomo has announced his choice for lieutenant governor.

On Wednesday, he tapped former one-term Rep. Kathy Hochul of Buffalo for the largely symbolic spot, replacing the retiring Bob Duffy.

The move — which The Post's Fred Dicker predicted last November — could help the governor shore up support among women following his failure to pass his entire Women's Equality Agenda.

It also puts a candidate from economically depressed Upstate on the Democratic ticket.

And notwithstanding her past backing from the National Rifle Association, the Hochul pick may even help the governor win over the Working Families Party, which promoted her House candidacy.

WFP support is crucial, because the governor not only wants to win, he wants to win big — big enough to enhance his standing as a possible presidential candidate.

At the very least, he wants to avoid any dropoff from the 63 percent he won in 2010.

Problem is, a new Quinnipiac Poll shows Cuomo's 29-point lead over GOP candidate Rob Astorino shrinks by more than half if the WFP runs a candidate — any candidate — against him, as it's threatening to do.

The party and its union overlords don't like what they consider Cuomo's fiscal conservatism, his embrace of charter schools and his failure to enact a full-scale public campaign-financing program.

The governor's challenge is to have it both ways: to move leftward enough to stop the WFP from running its own candidate against him without jeopardizing the reputation he has cultivated as a centrist.

We'll see whether an NRA-backed former congresswoman from Upstate does the trick.
