Yanks overcome injuries for wild win over Bosox

By the fifth inning, Joe Girardi was out of healthy position players, Francisco Cervelli was limping toward the disabled list, Carlos Beltran was playing first base for the initial time as a big leaguer, the Yankees didn't have a backup catcher and Red Sox manager John Farrell was ejected for arguing an overturned replay call that went against the visitors and accounted for a Yankees run.

Who says the full moon hovering above Yankee Stadium on Sunday night was just a prop for the national television audience?

Then in the sixth inning, Yangervis Solarte injured his left leg running across the first-base bag, but because there was nobody else to play, he had to stay in the game despite moving with a pronounced limp.

Derek Jeter (right quadriceps) and Brian Roberts (back) were not available.

When the bizarre game ended, the Yankees had taken three of four from the defending world champions with a 3-2 victory before 46,081.

Cervelli, who was playing first base because Kelly Johnson had to shift from first to third and Solarte to second when Roberts' back issue forced him to be scratched, grabbed his right hamstring as he crossed first base in the fourth. Two innings later Solarte injured his left leg on a similar play.

Beltran finished 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and impressed Girardi by pitching in at first.

"I didn't have a whole lot of choices tonight, but it tells you what type of player he is," Girardi said.

Overshadowed by the injuries, and Farrell getting tossed over a replay, was Ivan Nova rebounding from a brutal beating by the Orioles in his previous start when he gave up seven runs and 10 hits in 3 ²/₃ innings.

Sunday night he allowed two runs and eight hits in 7 ¹/₃ innings. Nova (2-1) left with one out in the eighth and was replaced by lefty Matt Thornton to face David Ortiz with the Yankees leading by a run.

Ichiro Suzuki, who went to right when Beltran took over for Cervelli at first, robbed Ortiz of a double with a running catch just in front of the right-center field wall.

Girardi then called for right-hander David Phelps to challenge the right-handed hitting Mike Napoli, who has homered over the Red Sox bullpen in left field in the sixth inning.

Napoli's fly ball down the left-field line was just out of reach of a sliding Brett Gardner and brought Daniel Nava to the plate with Napoli, the potential tying run, on second base.

Phelps went to a full count on Nava and walked him. With lefty-swinging A.J. Pierzynski batting and lefty Cesar Cabral throwing in the bullpen, Girardi stuck with the more experienced Phelps.

His second pitch hit Pierzynski and glanced off McCann's throwing hand. With Cervelli already gone and no other catcher on the roster, McCann kneeled on the grass while being examined by trainer Scott Littlefield.

Lefty Mike Carp hit for Ryan Roberts. Girardi avoided Cabral and stayed with Phelps and was rewarded when Phelps fanned Carp on a 2-2 breaking ball after the first two pitches were out of the strike zone.

Shawn Kelley — filling in for injured closer David Robertson — recorded the final three outs for his third save.

Beltran's second homer in as many games produced two runs off Felix Doubront in the third and the Yankees scored a run when the umpires reversed the call when Cervelli appeared to hit into an inning-ending double play in the fourth.

Farrell — seemingly still burning from a botched replay a day earlier — vehemently objected to the play being overruled and was immediately ejected by crew chief Bob Davidson.
