Yankees demolish Red Sox to take two of three from rivals

BOSTON — Fenway Park has rarely treated CC Sabathia kindly. Whether it was with the Indians or Yankees, New England's living room never has welcomed the large lefty with a warm smile or comforting hug.

Thursday night the current tenants handed Sabathia and the Yankees a hard-to-watch 14-5 victory in front of 37,356 by committing five errors, the pitchers throwing three wild pitches and the Red Sox hitters not taking advantage of Sabathia's early wildness.

The victory enabled the Yankees to take two of three from the defending World Series champions and are 5-2 against their blood rivals thuis season.

It was so ugly Red Sox manager John Farrell used first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp to pitch the ninth. Using a knuckleball, Carp walked five and gave up the final run.

One night after Michael Pineda was busted for applying pine tar to his neck, the Red Sox should have borrowed the sticky substance and put in the webbing of their gloves. All five errors were fielding miscues and made you wonder if they eat with those flawed hands.

Sabathia (3-2) issued three walks and hit two batters in the opening four innings. In six frames he allowed two runs, and fanned eight. The final five strikeouts were all looking.

Sabathia started the game 4-5 with a 4.74 ERA in 13 career starts at Fenway and was 3-4 with an ERA of 6.71 in 10 starts here as a Yankee.

Yangervis Solarte halted a 0-for-14 slump with a two-run double in the three-run second off Red Sox starter Felix Doubront and finished 2-for-5 with four RBIs.

Jacoby Ellsbury (3-for-6; 3 RBIs) and Derek Jeter (2-for-6) drove in two runs each and Mark Teixeira provided his first homer which sneaked over the Green Monster. Brian Roberts (2-for-6) scored four runs. Brett Gardner scored four times despite not getting a hit. He walked three times and reached on an error.

After scoring five runs in the seventh to take a 12-2 lead, manager Joe Girardi turned the game over to Shane Greene, a right-hander who arrived from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the afternoon.
In his major league debut, Greene faced five batters, retired one, walked three and left the bases loaded for Adam Warren with the score 12-3.

Two of three inherited runners scored and all three runs were unearned because of a Jeter fielding error.
