Instead of the potential battle for first place in the Atlantic Division the final Nets-Knicks game of the season looked like it could be when the schedule came out last summer, Tuesday night's clash at Barclays Center turned into a battle of who could care less.
That apathetic battle was won by the Nets, who despite playing four of their starters were beaten handily from start to finish, losing 109-98 to the Knicks — who were without Carmelo Anthony after it was announced before the game he has a small tear in his right labrum, and with Tyson Chandler playing just five minutes before sitting down for the night.
None of that mattered, though, as the Nets (44-37) were dominated by the Knicks (36-45), who had six players finish in double-figures led by Tim Hardaway Jr.'s 16 points.
The loss still left the Nets, who have lost three of their last four games, with work to do in order to clinch the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference — assuming they actually want to do so. Either a Nets win in Cleveland on Wednesday or a Wizards loss in Boston would ensure the Nets finish in that spot.
As it stands now, the Nets would travel to Chicago, the current four seed, to face the Bulls this weekend when the playoffs begin. That's because the Raptors and Bulls enter the final day of the regular season with matching 48-33 records, with the Raptors holding the tiebreaker because Toronto is a division champion.
The Raptors will be at the Garden Wednesday to face the Knicks, who could give them some trouble if they play the way they did inside Barclays Center. The Knicks shot 11-for-21 (52.4 percent) from 3-point range against the Nets, while forcing Brooklyn into 20 turnovers.
Marcus Thornton led the Nets with 24 points, while Mason Plumlee added 16 and nine rebounds as he continues his impressive finish to the season. The only other bright spot for the Nets, who were without Shaun Livingston (sprained right big toe), Alan Anderson (sore abdominal muscle) and Mirza Teletovic (personal reasons), was they made it through the game without any injuries.
