Ex-Met Harang leads Braves to one-hitter at Citi Field

The outcome of the Mets' 6-0 loss to Atlanta was hardly in doubt, a defeat long since decided. The only drama, the only question, was whether they were going to roll over and get no-hit by the Braves.

David Wright's two-out single in the eighth inning snapped Atlanta's no-hit bit just four outs short. It spared the Mets the indignity of being no-hit for the eighth time in their history, and drew the loudest applause of the night from the 33,199 at Citi Field. That's the kind of night it was for the Amazin's.

When David Wright dropped a single into left field with two out in the eighth off Luis Avilan, it was the closest thing they had to a highlight. Other than that, their lineup was dominated by Braves starter Aaron Harang, their bullpen got battered and they began their homestand in wretched fashion, shut out and one-hit by the rival Braves.

And the beating came at the right hands of a familiar foe. The Mets had signed Harang last Sept. 2, the veteran right-hander going 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA in four starts. But they unceremoniously tossed him away in the offseason and he came back to toss seven no-hit innings against them Friday.

Wright's single kept the Mets from being no-hit for the first time since Houston's Darryl Kile did it on Sept. 8, 1993. The Mets' strikeout-prone offense was completely befuddled by the 35-year-old Harang, who held them hitless over seven innings, striking out five. And even though the Mets did draw a half-dozen walks, they couldn't notch a single hit or plate a single run.

Harang came out after the seventh, having racked up 121 pitches. Avilan came on in the eighth and surrendered Wright's single before Jordan Walden retired the home team in order in the ninth.

Seven pitchers have thrown no-hitters after leaving the Mets: Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Mike Scott, Dwight Gooden, David Cone, Hideo Nomo and Philip Humber. Harang made a very real bid to join that list.

After Justin Upton singled to lead off the second and catcher Evan Gattis walked, Chris Johnson doubled to deep left to plate Upton, and Mets starter Jonathan Niese limited the damage there. He held the Braves to four hits and that lone run in his six solid innings, but dropped to a hard-luck 0-2 with a 2.84 ERA. While he was solid, Harang was spectacular.

Or the Mets were spectacularly bad, depending on your point of view.

Atlanta's Freddie Freeman crushed a 2-2 pitch into the bullpen for a two-run home run and 3-0 lead in the eighth.

Carlos Torres had relieved Niese with a scoreless seventh, but Gonzalez Germen came on having retired 31 of the last 34 batters he faced and promptly imploded, coughing up four earned runs in the eighth.
