Music was the reason we thought Kacey, 31, and Josh, 29, would easily be in tune with one another: She's an opera singer, and he's about to enroll in classes toward a master's degree in music therapy. Although the two had plenty to discuss over sushi and sake at Sushi Seki in Chelsea, they realized the night never quite hit a high note.
He said:
I swore to myself I'd give Kacey a chance, even though my brain was a bit broken by a girl I had hung out with the night before. But Kacey made me feel at ease right away when I met her.
There were some pretty hilarious moments — the funniest was when we struggled to eat giant sushi rolls. But overall, there weren't any romantic sparks.
Sushi Seki was great. They gave us a weird private room with sliding doors where we couldn't wear shoes, and the food was really good. There won't be a second date, but I'd be happy if I showed up to a gig someday and found out we were on the same bill.
She said:
As soon as I saw fresh-faced Josh in his jeans and sneakers, I felt like I just walked into a date with one of my little brother's friends! But I found out Josh and I actually have a lot of common interests. The more we talked, the more I realized why we were set up. I was able to relax a little more as the conversation (and sake) flowed, and there were a few moments when I felt like we clicked.
Sushi Seki was fantastic — we had our own private little room, and the menu was already chosen for us. It was a little disconcerting to take our shoes off upon first meeting — I was glad I didn't have on mismatched or holey socks!
We shared a really great meal, and normally I would have exchanged info and gone to see his band — I'm always excited to check out new sounds — but I felt as though we ended the night on a disconnected note.
