NYC Sanitation boss John Doherty announces retirement

After a harsh winter, long-serving city Sanitation boss John Doherty submitted his resignation Friday, officials said.

The anticipated move by Doherty — who started as a sanitation worker in 1960 — came after 51 years of service to the agency, including two stints as commissioner.

His most recent stretch at the helm started under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2002 and will end on March 28.

Mayor de Blasio, who asked Doherty to stay on temporarily rather than switch commissioners at the beginning of winter, hailed the 75-year-old commissioner's record of service to the city.

"I could not have been more fortunate to begin my term as mayor with a commissioner like that at my side, especially during my transition," said de Blasio.

He said he would name a replacement next week.

Despite Doherty'sa distinguished career, his final snow season was rocky.

He took a hit in late January after the city bungled snow cleanup on the Upper East Side.

Later that week, The Post photographed him outside the Mayor's Office looking like a schoolkid about to be disciplined by the principal.

"The orders were given, the execution was not what it should have been," de Blasio said of the botched snow-plowing at the time.
