Nets whip Grizzlies to move over .500

The Nets sure are happy to be back home again.

After spending almost three weeks away from Barclays Center, the Nets have returned to Brooklyn this week and picked up a pair of quality wins, following up Monday's pounding of the streaking Bulls with a 103-94 victory over the Grizzlies Wednesday night in front of a Barclays crowd 17,053.

With the win, the Nets (30-29) not only moved over .500 for the first time this season, but also kept pace with the fifth-place Wizards, who are one game ahead of the Nets, and remain three ahead of the Bobcats, after those teams also won Wednesday.

After blowing it open for the second time by outscoring the Grizzlies 33-16, at one point leading 87-57 late in the third quarter, it looked like the Nets would be able to coast to the win. But Memphis (34-26) made things interesting in the fourth against the end of the Nets' bench, going on a 30-9 run to cut the lead to 96-87 late in the fourth.

That forced Nets coach Jason Kidd to bring back his starters, with a layup from Deron Williams (16 points, seven assists) and a 3-pointer from Joe Johnson pushing the lead back to 101-87 with 1:43 remaining. It ensured the Nets fourth straight win and sixth in their last eight games, dating to the beginning of their six-game, two-week Western road trip.

As the Nets did against the Bulls, the Nets led from wire-to-wire, jumping out to an 8-0 lead and led 26-5 with 3:30 remaining in the first.

But Memphis closed out the quarter with a 14-4 run to get back within 30-19 at the end of the first, and then opened the second with a 7-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 30-26.

Just when it looked like the Nets would allow Memphis to take its first lead, Marcus Thornton turned the game around. Thornton has proven in his short time with the Nets he's capable of getting hot quickly, as he did in scoring 25 points in 23 minutes in the Nets' victory in Milwaukee on Saturday.

But Thornton might have been even hotter during the second quarter Tuesday, when after hitting a jumper early in the period, he scored 13 straight points for the Nets, knocking down a trio of 3-pointers as well as making a driving layup and tipping the ball in, pushing the Nets' lead back to double-digits, and helping Brooklyn go into halftime with a 54-44 lead.

While Thornton, who finished with 20 points, led the way in the first half, it was Johnson who did so in the second, scoring 14 of his 21 points after the break, and finishing the night 8-for-13 overall and 5-for-7 from 3-point range.

As a team, the Nets finished 15-for-26 (57.7 percent) from 3-point range, and shot over 51 percent as a team.

Jon Leuer led Memphis off the bench with 19 points. The Grizzlies were without big man Zach Randolph, who was sick, and the Nets were missing Kevin Garnett, out with back spasms, for the third straight game.
