DALLAS — The Nets' bench made sure Jason Kidd's 41st birthday was a happy one.

Thanks to another round of late-game heroics from Joe Johnson, the Nets emerged with an improbable 107-104 overtime victory over the Mavericks in front of a sellout crowd of 19,603 at American Airlines Arena on Sunday night.

After trailing by four with less than a minute remaining in regulation, the Nets went on a 16-4 run over the final 45 seconds and the first 3 ¹/₂ minutes of overtime to put away a game that, for most of the night, looked to be out of reach.

With the win, the Nets (37-31) upped their winning streak to four games while remaining 1 ¹/₂ games behind the Raptors for first place in the Atlantic Division, as well as moving within a game of the Bulls for fourth place in the Eastern Conference and increasing their fifth-place lead over the Wizards to two games.

After trailing since the early stages of the first quarter, the Nets surged into a 73-72 lead early in the fourth after back-to-back 3-pointers from Marcus Thornton and a pair of free throws from Deron Williams. They later took a 79-75 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers from Mirza Teletovic and Thornton with 7:37 remaining.

But Dallas fought its way back into the lead behind a three-point play from Monta Ellis, who led Dallas with 26 points, and a turnaround jumper from Kidd's former teammate, Vince Carter (12 points, 10 rebounds, four assists) that gave the Mavericks a 85-81 lead with 4:14 to play.

Then, after the teams exchanged points for the next few minutes, it looked as if the Nets were on their way to a loss after Samuel Dalembert made a pair of free throws to give the Mavericks a 91-87 lead with 44.7 seconds remaining. But, after Paul Pierce made a pair of free throws with 41.9 seconds left and Dirk Nowitzki missed a jumper, Johnson sliced between Shawn Marion and Nowitzki to lay the ball in and tie the game with 9.9 seconds to play. The game then went to overtime after Ellis' potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer went long.

In overtime, Johnson picked up where he left off, as he drained a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper to put the Nets in fromt, and they extended their advantage to 100-95 with 2:16 remaining on a steal and subsequent layup by Shaun Livingston.

Then, after an Ellis miss, a 3-pointer by Williams with 1:26 remaining gave the Nets a 103-95 lead and sent the fans to the exits.

The Mavericks gave themselves a chance after back-to-back 3-pointers fromEllis inside the final 30 seconds of overtime, but his potential game-tying 3 at the buzzer went wanting, and the Nets emerged with the win.
Dalembert finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks for the Mavericks, who only got 10 points on 2-for-12 shooting from Nowitzki.

Brooklyn was led by Johnson's 21 points — 17 in the second half and overtime — while Thornton had 20 and Williams and Pierce each added 15.
