Teletovic’s 24-point 2nd quarter lifts Nets over Mavericks

Mirza Teletovic turned Friday night's game between the Nets and Mavericks into a real-life version of NBA Jam.

The Bosnian power forward lit up Barclays Center in the second quarter, going 9-for-11 from the field to score 24 points on his way to a career-high 34 as the Nets nipped Dallas, 107-106.

After sitting for the entire first quarter, Teletovic entered at the start of the second and almost immediately started burying jumpers. Taking advantage of excellent ball movement by the Nets (19-22), Teletovic stationed himself around the perimeter and waited for his teammates to hit him with passes for open shots.

That happened repeatedly, as he took a pass from Deron Williams to drain a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the second quarter and then, after Williams hit a pull-up jumper, knocked down two more on the next two possessions off passes from Jason Terry and Williams.

Teletovic then made a layup after collecting an offensive rebound off a Terry missed 3-pointer, before hitting another pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around a fastbreak layup.

All told, Teletovic knocked down his first seven shots — including five shots from 3-point range — before finally missing a contested 15-foot jumper. But in case anyone was worried about him getting cold, Teletovic then knocked down another 3-pointer before hitting a contested jumper over Dirk Nowitzki with less than a minute to go in the second to cap his scoring in the quarter.

When it was over, Teletovic had finished with 24 of the Nets' 39 points in the quarter, and had helped the Nets turn a three-point deficit after the first quarter into a 57-46 halftime lead.

After hitting a pair of free throws in the third, Teletovic added eight points for good measure in the fourth quarter, including a tough runner off the dribble after driving past Vince Carter with 1:13 remaining that pushed the Nets' lead back to seven at 100-93.

Teletovic was far from the only Net to have a hot shooting night, as Kevin Garnett continued his mid-season renaissance by making his first five baskets to finish with 10 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, while Williams had another strong game off the bench, going 5-for-8 from the field and finishing with 18 points and 11 assists.

Even with the hot shooting from the Nets, however, the Mavericks managed to hang around, pulling to within two — 82-80 — early in the fourth quarter when Jose Calderon's 3-pointer.

But the Nets responded with a 9-2 run — begun by a four-point play when Teletovic was fouled by Devin Harris while Terry hit a 3-pointer — to take a 91-82 lead that put the game out of reach, though the Mavericks did mange a late, fruitless surge.

The Nets have won four in a row and are 9-1 in January, remaining 2 ¹/₂ games back of the Raptors, who beat the 76ers on Friday, for first place in the Atlantic Division.
