Patrick Sharp scored three goals and the Blackhawks earned a 5-3 victory over the Devils on Friday night at the Prudential Center in Newark.
Defenseman Marek Zidlicky scored twice and Andy Greene once for the Devils, who lost in regulation for only the second time in nine games (5-2-2).
After a scoreless first period, Sharp got Chicago on the board first, but Greene tallied 43 seconds later to even the game at 1-1 after two periods. Then Chicago took over early in the third with three goals in the first 5:34 of the period. Brandon Saad, Sharp and Marian Hossa all scored giving the Blackhawks a 4-1 advantage, but the Devils came back.
Zidlicky's two goals moved the Devils to within one, at 4-3, but that's as close as they got.
With the Devils trailing by that score late in the third period, Martin Brodeur attempted a poke-check as Sharp came skating in on the left side. He missed, leaving the net vacant as Sharp's third of the game and 25th on the season iced the win for Chicago.
Sharp also picked up two goals in the Blackhawks' 5-2 win against the Devils on Dec. 23 in Chicago, giving him five goals in two games against New Jersey.
Brodeur had 24 saves, and the five goals allowed tied his season high. He also allowed five in a 5-4 loss at Columbus on Dec. 10.
New Jersey kept the top power play team in the league off the scoreboard in three chances, but after defeating the Penguins 2-1 on Tuesday, failed to win consecutive home games — something they have only accomplished once all season, on Dec. 14 and 18.
