No Deron Williams? No problem.
The Nets, once again forced to play without their star point guard, still managed to pick up their third straight win, beating Atlanta 91-86 in front of a sellout crowd of 17,732 inside Barclays Center Monday night.
With Williams sidelined for the 12th time this season with a sprained left ankle, the Nets (13-21) got a big contribution from his replacement, Alan Anderson, along with Joe Johnson and Mirza Teletovic to stay undefeated in 2014 and move within a game of eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Anderson, Johnson and Teletovic combined to deliver almost all of the scoring for the Nets in the third quarter, as they scored 24 of the team's 26 points to help the Nets outscore Atlanta (18-17) 26-15 in the third to reverse a six-point halftime deficit and take a 72-67 lead into the fourth quarter.
After the Nets had gone 1-for-12 from behind the 3-point arc in the first half, Teletovic (3-for-4) and Anderson (2-for-3) combined to hit five 3-pointers in the third quarter to spark the surge, including Anderson hitting both of his shots from deep on consecutive possessions as part of eight straight points from him to cap a 14-0 run to open the second half and give the Nets a 60-52 lead.
Atlanta eventually battled back, however, taking a 78-77 lead midway through the fourth on a breakaway dunk by DeMarre Carroll following a Paul Pierce turnover.
But the Nets immediately responded with a Johnson 3-pointer and a breakaway dunk by Shaun Livingston after a Kyle Korver turnover to take an 82-78 lead they'd never relinquish.
They nearly did, though, when Johnson was stripped by Paul Millsap after a Jeff Teague 3-pointer had cut the Nets' lead to 86-84. But after Millsap missed a layup at the other end, Johnson hit Teletovic for a corner 3-pointer with 44.6 seconds left that gave the Nets a five-point cushion.
Johnson led the Nets with 23 points against his former team — breaking a streak of five straight games in single-digits — and scored 15 of his points in the second half, while Teletovic finished with 16 and Anderson 14 for the Nets. Millsap and Teague each scored 16 points to lead the Hawks.
The Nets got off to a nice start thanks to big contributions from Pierce — who scored all nine of his points in the first — Shaun Livingston and Andrei Kirilenko, who combined to score 20 of the Nets' 27 points in the first quarter on 7-for-10 shooting.
That, along with forcing the Hawks into seven turnovers, allowed the Nets to end the first quarter with a 27-21 lead.
The Hawks flipped things around in the second, however, by closing the quarter with an 11-0 run that featured seven points from Millsap — including a 3-pointer to cap it with 28.8 seconds remaining in the second — to send Atlanta into halftime with a 52-46 lead.
