Clippers crush Knicks on day full of losses

Jeremy Tyler was the first big man off the bench for the Knicks. J.R. Smith was the first sub in the game. Carmelo Anthony had the Knicks' first 20-20 game since 2010 — yet he missed 19 of 23 shots. Yeah, "normal" or "typical" rarely fits with the Knicks anymore.

Unless you're talking about injuries. Or bad losses. Those elements remained firm and typical, though: Friday afternoon, the Knicks received more bad injury news, learning Amar'e Stoudemire and Kenyon Martin were out for "approximately" two weeks.

From there it didn't get any better. In a brutish, foul-plagued, frigid-shooting, unpoised game by both sides, the Knicks were more brutish, more frigid and less poised as they opened their eight-game homestand with a 109-95 dud against the Clippers at the Garden.

After getting pounded in Indiana in what Anthony called an "embarrassing" effort Thursday, the Knicks shot just .349. Anthony finished with 26 points, 20 rebounds and was 16-of-16 from the free-throw line to offset his 4-of-23 shooting. Smith put in 24 points off the bench and Tyson Chandler forged a 12-point, 14-rebound double.

For the Clippers, Blake Griffin scored 32 points, former Knick Jamal Crawford tossed in 29 and DeAndre Jordan also compiled a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.

A few hours before tipoff, the Knicks announced the results of MRI exams on their two temporarily lost big men, Stoudemire and Martin, who both sustained left ankle injuries Thursday in Indianapolis. One test confirmed Stoudemire suffered a sprain and a bone bruise while Martin was found to be plagued with a sprain and tendinitis.

"They're going to be out at least two weeks, both players," said coach Mike Woodson.

Again, the Knicks experienced a nightmare third quarter, getting outscored, 26-17, while shooting a nauseating 4-of-22 (.182). Their last field goal in the quarter came at 5:09. When the fourth quarter began, the Clippers, playing without Chris Paul, led, 76-67. At that point, Anthony was 3-of-17 from the floor. The Knicks had led, 65-62, late in the third, but it all went to Hades in a handbasket after that.

So with the Clippers bringing in a front line featuring Griffin and Jordan, Woodson stayed with a big starting unit, featuring Tyson Chandler and Andrea Bargnani.

"They haven't played a whole lot of minutes together," said Woodson. "I thought we got off to an excellent start [Thursday] with that unit. We just didn't sustain it throughout the ball game. We hit first early and then the Pacers hit and we had no answers for them. Somehow, when we do hit we've just got to continue to hit and do it for 48 minutes. It just can't be in stretches. [Thursday] we had the early stretch which was good then it was poor the rest of the way."

The Clippers have their own headache with Paul out because of a separated right shoulder. So coach Doc Rivers figured on a street fight. And he got one.

"They are at home, they are playing much better," Rivers said of the Knicks. "Listen, without Chris we have to be ready every night. We don't have the luxury right now to show up and think we are going to win a game."

The Knicks wasted little time confirming Rivers' concerns. They were good again early, jumping to a 17-9 lead with Chandler and Bargnani doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Anthony struggled with his shot — he missed 8-of-10 attempts in the first half but repeatedly got to the line, hitting 9-of-9 free throws en route to 14 points. That helped keep the Knicks tied, 50-50, at intermission.
