‘World’s first female chocolatier’ opens shop by Union Square

The world's first female chocolatier has just opened her first branded boutique — in New York City.

Amedei, artisanal chocolate from Tuscany, opened at 15 E. 18th St., by Union Square, over the holidays.

The chocolate is crafted in Pontedera, Tuscany, by Cecilia Tessieri, who calls herself "the only female maître chocolatier in the world."

Amadei is the name of Cecilia's maternal grandmother, who supported her when she launched her chocolate venture in 1990.

The space was formerly occupied by a to-go counter from Tarallucci E Vino.

When Tessieri — a four-time winner of the Chocolate Academy of London's "Golden Bean" Award — started, she traveled the globe for cacao beans. After seven years of testing — and choosing plantations on their "ethical and humanitarian standards," she produced the first Amadei chocolate bars.

She supervises the production process from bean to bar and resells the cacao beans that aren't used in production locally, which helps the local chocolate industries around the world.
