Winston is third Florida State player, youngest to claim Heisman

Saturday night's Heisman Trophy presentation held as much intrigue as one of Florida State's 13 blowout victories.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Jameis Winston claimed college sports' greatest award, becoming the third Florida State player to win the prestigious award, joining quarterbacks Charlie Ward (1993) and Chris Weinke (2000).

The prototypical 6-foot-4 pocket passer with a rifle for a right arm is the fourth straight quarterback to win the Heisman, and the 12th in the past 13 years to take home the honor. At 19 years old, he is the youngest winner.

"I never thought I would be standing here at the beginning of the spring," Winston said at a pre-ceremony press conference. "It's just a blessing to be here."

After Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman last year, the sport's top honor has now gone to a redshirt freshman in back-to-back years after elite and arguably deserving freshman — most recently Michael Crabtree in 2007 and Adrian Peterson in 2004 — previously were passed over.

"Now that the barrier has been broken down, I don't know if it ever should've been there," said Manziel, the fifth-place finisher and one of the six finalists invited to New York. "I thought the barrier was kind of silly in my own mind."

Winston is in position to become just the second player ever to win two Heisman Trophies, joining Archie Griffin, and the first to ever win three, despite the odds he heads off to the NFL after next season.

Alabama quarter AJ McCarron finished second and Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch came in the third.

It's been a wild ride for Winston, the dual sport star — he is also the Florida State closer and a starting outfielder on its baseball team — who has dealt with well-chronicled off-the-field issues and has led the Seminoles to the No. 1 ranking and the BCS championship game Jan. 6 against Auburn.

Winston was accused of sexual assault in an incident last December by a former Florida State student. The state attorney's office opted not to charge him last week after an investigation, though Patricia Carroll, the attorney for the woman who accused Winston, asked for Florida's attorney general to independently examine the rape investigation on Friday, saying it was full of question marks.

Winston declined to talk about the issue until Friday when he said, "I knew I did nothing wrong. I knew I could respect the process and I would eventually be vindicated."

Winston's name was left off 115 ballots (13 percent).

The investigation has somewhat overshadowed Winston's dynamic season. The Alabama native from the same town — Bessemer, Ala. — as former Heisman winner and Auburn star Bo Jackson led Florida State to a 13-0 record and setting freshman records in passing yards (3,820) and touchdowns (38), also a single-season ACC record.

"This year has been a special year, not only for me but Florida State University," Winston said.

His brilliant freshman season isn't done. He has a chance to lead Florida State to its first national title since 1999, 23 days from now in Pasadena, Calif., against No. 2 Auburn and Heisman finalist Tre Mason.
