Sixers stun Nets in overtime

PHILADELPHIA — The Nets have seemingly been searching for rock bottom all season long.

They found it Friday night.

Evan Turner's layup as time expired gave the 76ers — who came into the game losers of seven straight and 19 of their last 23 — a 121-120 overtime win over the Nets in front of 15,267 inside Wells Fargo Center.

The Nets (9-17) played without starters Kevin Garnett (rest) and joe Johnson (personal reasons).

After beating the Sixers by 36 on Monday night in Brooklyn, things were much closer throughout Friday's contest, with neither team holding a double-digit lead all night long.

That was mainly because, despite shooting 15-for-33 from behind the 3-point arc, the Sixers maintained huge advantages in both points in the paint (66-30) and on the boards (49-36).

The two teams battled all the way through regulation, with neither team leading by more than three points through the final six minutes of the fourth quarter. Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation, with the Nets taking a 107-106 lead with 1:06 remaining on a pair of Alan Anderson free throws before Evan Turner made one-of-two free throws to tie the game with 50.4 seconds left.

After Anderson and Michael Carter-Williams traded missed layups, the Nets had the ball with a chance to win with 5.5 seconds left, but Deron Williams missed a jumper from the top of the key and the game went into overtime.

Williams gave the Sixers the lead when he threw a pass straight to Young and then fouled Carter-Williams on the ensuing fast break, allowing the rookie point guard to knock down a pair of free throws and give the Sixers a 116-115 lead, one that grew to 119-115 on a Young corner 3-pointer.

Williams answered with a long jumper to cut that lead in half, but the Nets failed to secure rebounds on back-to-back misses by Carter-Williams and Turner before finally corralling a Spencer Hawes miss, setting up Williams hitting Paul Pierce for a wide open 3 to give the Nets a 120-119 lead with 16.9 seconds left.

Turner then drove to the rim from the top of the key, only to get blocked by Anderson out of bounds with 6.3 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds play, Turner got the ball back at the top of the key and drove to rim. His layup went over Brook Lopez's outstretched arm, bounced on the rim a few times, and settled into the basket.

Without Johnson, who started the first 25 games of the season, the Nets employed their 12th different starting lineup of the season. That meant Pierce, who had come off the bench for his first five games after recovering from a broken bone in his right hand, returned to the starting lineup. Pierce continued his impressive play with 24 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in 43 minutes.

With Garnett also out, Mirza Teletovic got his second start this week against the Sixers, and took advantage of the additional playing time. The floor-spacing power forward matched his career-high of five 3-pointers in the first half alone, and finished with six, good for 18 points. Anderson, playing in place of Johnson, also was excellent, scoring 26 points and hitting five 3-pointers.
