Knicks lose game, Prigioni

Say it ain't so, Pablo?

On a night when starting point guard Pablo Prigioni went down with a broken big right toe and is lost at least two weeks, the Knicks lost a heartbreaker in the final seconds Monday night.

Bradley Beal drove by an exhausted backup point guard Beno Udrih to score the game-winning layup with 6.9 seconds left that put the Wizards up 1. The Knicks still had three timeouts but coach Mike Woodson let Carmelo Anthony do his thing.

He leisurely dribbled upcourt, seemingly unaware of the time, and was forced to launch an off-balance 3-pointer that missed badly and the Wizards survived 102-101 at the Garden.

The Knicks had rallied from 15 points down in the third quarter and seven points down midway through the fourth. But they sputtered again to fall to 7-17 while absorbing the bad news of Prigioni's injury.

Prigioni, second in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio behind Chris Paul, stubbed his toe with 9:49 left in the third quarter and departed to the locker room, where X-rays revealed the fracture. Udrih came on and played the rest of the way, and may have been too gassed to defend Beal on the last blowby. After the play, Udrih reacted as if there should have been a help defender behind him.

The Knicks are already without starting point guard Raymond Felton, but hope was high that a turnaround was in store because Tyson Chandler should return Wednesday in Milwaukee.

But now two setbacks in one night befell the Knicks. Anthony had a big night despite the awkwardness of his final possession, finishing with 32 points and helping spearhead the comeback. J.R. Smith had a mini-revival with 18 points, banging in five 3-pointers in his best second half of the season.

It was a thriller in the final two minutes. Bargnani hit two free throws to give the Knicks a 100-97 lead with 1:04 left. Bargnani blocked a John Wall drive, but Washington maintained possession and Beal hit a long 3 with Bargnani in his face, tying the score with 45 seconds to go.

Udrih got a gift call on a drive, but made just 1-of-2 free throws to put the Knicks up 101-100 with 24.2 seconds left.

The Knicks fell behind 57-42 with 9:49 left in the third as boos rained down and Woodson called time out. The Wizards were outhustling the Knicks.

Martell Webster finished with 30 points for the Wizards, unstoppable from deep, and Wall finished with 20 after a 19-point first half.

After Prigioni went down, Udrih enlivened the club. The Knicks went on a 28-8 run and all things looked good as the Knicks held a 77-71 lead late in the third.

Bargnani started the spree with a hard-driving bucket. Then Smith showed a pulse with back-to-back 3-pointers — one off an Udrih steal and transition feed. That got it to 59-54.

Anthony lit it up from everywhere, driving through double-teams to the hole and knocking down partially contested stepback jumpers. His jumper put the Knicks ahead 66-64.

Udrih was terrific, penetrating on one play and feeding Iman Shumpert for a corner 3. Hardaway drilled a left-corner 3-pointer and the Knicks were up 75-69.

But soon word filtered Prigioni's toe was broken and the Knicks sunk right with the bad news. Anthony made a faux pas at the end of the third, too. He left too much time on the clock for a final shot, missing a 3-pointer with five seconds left. Webster made a 3-pointer to put the Wizards back up 77-75.
