Knicks fall apart late, lose to Celtics

BOSTON — At least the Knicks didn't humiliate themselves for four quarters against the Celtics as they did Sunday in a 41-point loss to Boston. Thursday, they only embarrassed themselves in the final six minutes.

The Knicks carried a nine-point lead early in the fourth quarter before choking offensively and allowing the Celtics to rally for a 90-86 victory at TD Garden.

The Knicks shot a brutal 5-of-18 in the fourth quarter, playing tight, a club wracked with trade reports and rumors of coach Mike Woodson's future. Carmelo Anthony notched 26 points, but only six came after halftime. He went stone cold in the final minutes — which has become commonplace — and finished shooting 9-of-24. The Knicks shot 40 percent overall as they fell to 6-16.

Amar'e Stoudemire continued his emergence with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, but didn't get the ball late.

Anthony hit on a strong driving layup and got fouled to put the Knicks up 83-81 with 4:06 left. However, he didn't score again and had no late help. Andrea Bargnani had a solid first three quarters and finished with 22 points, but he also missed three straight shots midway through fourth.

It was a very strange night for J.R. Smith, who took just one shot in 27 minutes in what appeared to be a purposeful attempt to reverse his slide. He didn't shoot until 5:30 left in the fourth quarter, bricking a 3-pointer. Smith finished scoreless with six rebounds and three assists.

The Knicks controlled the third quarter and took a 61-59 lead a little more than midway through the period on a Kenyon Martin dunk. They got up 69-92 late in the third after two straight jump shots by Bargnani.

In the fourth, Vitor Faverani scored on a layup off a bullet pass from Jordan Crawford to put Boston up by four points with 55 seconds left. Bargani hit a short jumper to make it a two-point game, but Jeff Green barreled to the hole for a layup and got fouled with nine seconds left, all but icing it. Green missed the free throw, keeping it at 90-86, but Anthony's off-balance shot from the top of the key missed the entire rim to seal the Knicks' fate.

A 16-2 Boston run to start the second quarter helped put the Celtics ahead by 17 points midway through the period, 48-31. But the Knicks chipped away, with Anthony going wild and Smith uncharacteristically moving the ball, trailing by just 54-48 at halftime.

The Knicks didn't fall behind by 18-1 as they did in the Sunday laugher. They led 22-19 late in the first quarter after an Anthony 3-pointer. But the Celtics rallied and took a three-point lead after one on Avery Bradley's buzzer-beating trey from well behind the arc.

The Celtics carried the momentum by blitzing the Knicks early in the second. Midway through the period, the Celtics were shooting 61 percent, hurting the Knicks inside and outside. Jared Sullinger scored on an offensive rebound to put them up 40-28 and it got all the way to 45-28. But the Knicks closed the half on a 13-3 run, with Bargnani and Anthony taking over.
