Johnson’s 37 leads Nets over 76ers

The Nets might not have had Brook Lopez, but all they needed was Joe Johnson.

Johnson finished with 37 points — including torching the 76ers for 29 in the third quarter alone — as the Nets easily disposed of the pitiful 76ers, 130-94, in front of 16,733 inside Barclays Center. It was the Nets' fourth win in their last five games as they continue to try and drag themselves out of the massive hole they dug to start the season.

Few players ever enter into the kind of zone Johnson did Monday night, when it seemed like the ball was destined to settle into the bottom of the net every time it left his hands.

There was no better example than Johnson's final make of the game, a step-back 3-pointer from the corner while being fouled by James Anderson that left Paul Pierce smiling while looking on from the opposite side of the court and sent the crowd into a frenzy after seeing the biggest scoring quarter in Barclays Center's brief history.

Johnson, who also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists, looked like he was playing a video game, in part because of some dreadful defense from the Sixers that left him with one wide-open shot after another from deep.

He outscored Philadelphia by himself in the third, 29-25, while barely missing a shot. He went 10-for-13 overall in the quarter — including 8-for-10 from 3-point range — to get those 29 points, breaking his previous career-high for points in a quarter of 22, while also setting a new career-high for 3-pointers in a game by going 10-for-14.

Johnson's night was just one of many impressive efforts for the Nets, who benefitted from the frenetic pace the Sixers play to put up some jaw-dropping numbers across the board. The Nets set a franchise record for 3-pointers made (21), while shooting over 60 percent from the field and exactly 60 percent (21-for-35) from 3-point range.

Deron Williams was stellar once again, finishing with 13 points and 13 assists in 29:50, while six Nets finished in double-figures. With the win, the Nets kept pace with the Celtics, who remain in first place by two games in the Atlantic Division.

The Nets jumped on the Sixers early, scoring the first seven points of the game and eventually taking a 27-11 lead with 4:42 remaining in the first on a free throw by Mirza Teletovic, who was starting in place of Brook Lopez who sat out his second straight game with a sprained left ankle.

Thanks to their frenetic pace, however, the Sixers — who play faster than any other team in the league — managed to keep finding ways to claw back into the game by occasionally knocking down a 3-pointer, or by creating turnovers that led to easy transition baskets.

Philadelphia outscored the Nets 11-0 in transition and 6-0 in points off turnovers in the second quarter, which allowed them to stay in a game they really had no business being in.

It had appeared the Nets were about to put the game out of reach late in the second, when they took a 58-40 lead with 1:39 remaining in the half after a free throw from Pierce, who came off the bench for the fourth straight game. But the Sixers scored the final eight points of the half, including 3-pointers from Hollis Thompson and James Anderson, to enter the break trailing 58-48.

The Nets put them away for good, however, going on a 14-3 run to open the third quarter and take a 75-51 that allowed them to put the game on cruise control.
