Shumpert foul costs Knicks in OT loss to Pacers

A ticky-tack foul call on Iman Shumpert helped cost the Knicks a victory over the Pacers on Wednesday night at the Garden.

Everything was going smoothly for the Knicks against all odds as they led the Pacers by three with 9.2 seconds left in regulation. Indiana's Paul George fired up a 3-pointer that became a wild air ball and the Knicks looked as if they had shocked the Pacers.

But a foul was called on Shumpert, giving George three free throws. Replays showed Shumpert may have just grazed George's elbow, but it was suspect whether a foul should've been called at that pivotal stage. The Knicks were in shock, George made all three free throws to force overtime and the Pacers ran away with a 103-96 victory.

Yes, the Knicks (3-8) can't get a break on their home court. It was their sixth straight loss at the Garden.

It ruined a solid, bounce-back night from a down-in-the-dumps Carmelo Anthony, who finished with 30 points and 18 rebounds. He heard "MVP'' chants for the first time this season.

After George's free throws, Anthony had one last chance to win it but missed a turnaround in the lane. Ultimately, Anthony was outplayed by George, who finished with 35 points — 21 after the third quarter.

The Knicks came in injury-riddled and emotionally battered, facing the same Indiana team that ruined their season last year in the second round of the playoffs.

The Knicks ran off to a 13-0 lead against the playoff tormentors and led most of the way. Everyone contributed in the big start, with each of the starters scoring early on.

It wouldn't have come down to a Shumpert foul if Andrea Bargnani didn't lay a giant egg. He fouled out and finished with 10 points on a dreadful 4-of-16 shooting. Beno Udrih, starting again for ailing Raymond Felton (hip) had a nice outing, scoring 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting and an off-balance spinning runner that gave the Knicks a one-point lead with 1:10 left. J.R. Smith added 21 points.

Knicks coach Mike Woodson gave a fiery pregame speech in which he cited the Pacers' 4-7 start last season after which they bounced back to win the third seed and knock the Knicks into summer.

The Knicks got a tough break in the fourth when George Hill missed both free throws, but Bargnani couldn't secure the defensive rebound and it skittered out of bounds — the type of little plays that lose games. The Pacers kept possession with 3:10 left. Hill promptly drained a 3-pointer to put the Pacers up 82-81.

After Anthony scored on a spin move and Bargnani drilled a 3-pointer, the Knicks raced to a 13-0 lead with the Pacers missing their first seven shots.

The Knicks started out 7-of-12, but then got into a big funk, missing 12 of their next 13 shots. Still, Anthony was tough to stop as the Knicks kept feeding him on the low post and their defense kicked in.

He hit a couple of tough turnaround jumpers and blew to the hole for baskets. He finished the half with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting and seven rebounds. No complaining to the referees, either.

The Pacers got a lucky break when 7-foot-2 center Roy Hibbert threw up a desperation 3-point shot at the first-quarter buzzer — with Cole Aldrich on him — and it banked in, making it 19-14 after one.

Before the game, Woodson said Anthony was perhaps "trying to do too much,'' and it resulted in seven turnovers in Detroit Tuesday. A confidant of Anthony's said he is going through a confidence crisis for the first time in a long while.

Anthony was again battling the referees against the Pacers, but this time it appeared to justified. Anthony scored on a fastbreak layup over Hibbert, but a charge was called when the big center fell to the floor.

Anthony was beside himself. Earlier, Lance Stephenson threw him to the floor while chasing a loose ball and no flagrant was called. The final straw came when Anthony was posting for position against George and was flagged for an offensive foul. Anthony looked stunned. It was his fourth foul and he had to come out with 5:18 left in the third.
