Rangers fall to Bruins in Nash’s return

If one were to guess a night when the Rangers couldn't convert, this wouldn't have been it.

With All-Star winger Rick Nash returning to the lineup on Tuesday night at the Garden after missing six weeks with a concussion, the Rangers produced more than enough chances. Yet they lost to the Bruins, 2-1, leaving nothing but the sour taste of disappointment.

Nash had a bushel of shots on net and directed at net, but none got through. Midway through the third period, with the Rangers down 2-1, Nash and Brad Richards executed a nice weave play, but Nash's initial shot was stopped by Tuukka Rask, and Richard's mid-air hack hit the side of the net.

That seemed to just typify the night.

The Rangers (10-11-0) came in ranked fourth-to-last in goals per game, yet they managed to pepper the Bruins (14-6-1) with 44 shots. All but one was intercepted by Rask, who allowed his tired team, playing the second game of a back-to-back, to get away with long stretches pinned in its own zone.

It didn't matter the Bruins mustered only 22 shots on Henrik Lundqvist, because they got just enough of them by him.

The good play continued for the Rangers in the second, but they finished the period down, 2-1, despite outshooting Boston 33-13 through 40 minutes.

The Bruins took the lead just under five minutes into the period when Rangers defenseman Justin Falk made a blunder at the offensive blue line and Boston enforcer Shawn Thornton came racing the other way. Much to the surprise of everyone — including Lundqvist — Thornton fired a rolling puck into the top-left corner for a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, the Bruins then added to their lead while a man down, as Daniel Paille beat Ryan Callahan to a loose puck and, on the breakaway, netted a low backhand through Lundqvist's legs.

Just a minute after Paille's goal, the Rangers continued to push the play, and finally got rewarded. Still on the same power play, Derick Brassard managed to shoot a puck from above the left circle through the legs of defenseman Johnny Boychuk and over the glove of Rask, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The Rangers held the play for most of the scoreless first, outshooting the Bruins 16-6. Their best chance came when Chris Kreider was awarded a penalty shot after being taken down by Boychuk on a power-play breakaway, but Kreider's wrist shot was stopped by Rask's blocker.

Nash did not start the game, but when he stepped on the ice for his first shift one minute in, he got a noticeable cheer from the Garden fans.
